On 1971 Charger, this web site        http://www.oldride.com/library/1971_dodge_charger.html

It says Small-Block V-8 - Left front of block, below cylinder head.

The question I have can someone tell me where I can find the number on my car, On the same web site for my 1973 440 it says left front of block near tappet rail.  I have no idea what a tappet rail is.  I would like to know if my car is a matching numbers vehicle.  I have
owned it for 5 years and have no idea.  Thanks

the engine number on my 440 is located on the right side and bottom of  the block where it meets the sump

On that website I posted it says 440 location is   - Left rear of block, near oil pan flange for the 1971 year.  Good luck

thanks  :cheers: good info but still not what I'm looking for , I'm looking for the same engine number as the 340 030 180 that is stamped into the machined pad below left head  on the 340 in the roadrunner  .

to rego car over here, car has to have a engine number  that is different to vin number. e.g. the roadrunner has 340 030 180 as its engine number on rego papers  . is the pad at front and vin pad on lower right at oil pan the only machined pads with anything stamped on them   :shruggy:

It HAS to be different?  Never heard of that, some laws are strange huh?  :shruggy:

I have registered 5 American cars in the last 14 years and never heard of this. RTA in Sydney does not care about this. My brother in law works at RTA and tells me 99 % of RTA officers have not got a clue about old yank tanks. You are unlucky you are dealing with an idiot up there in Newy. Any chance you could just try another registry ?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong , but if engine is from a charger , ? Engine number has vin numbers , very similar to rad support

 im confused  :P  (  easily done   I know  :smilie_help: :image_294343::yesnod: :lol: )

if your car has the original motor the engine number will be the  whole ( early 69 ) vin number on the side of the block , or later 69 & onwards last 9 digits ,  :yesnod:

if its got to be different , & I have know idea why they would want it to be ??   :shruggy:, how about !  just Add the assembly date of the engine to the full or partial stamped vin on block  :yesnod:

You are correct.  Many vintage cars, especially European ones, had a separate chassis number and engine number so I suspect this registry is asking him for something based on information which stopped applying to American cars not long after WWII.

guy doing "blue slips " at the moment is filling in for usual guy who has gone north for the winter  :flame:
hasn't got a clue ,think he  has had to phone a friend.  the first time I went to see him he asked me to come back in a couple of days .
think he's been told to look for a engine number and he is going to find one, one way or the other   :scratchchin:

I understand now I once had an idiot for blue slip inspection.  I just  went to someone else. I know they are hard to find, good luck.
