This is not good......(glad I have a 6.1)

Hemi Timing Chain Defect: Chrysler's Hemi timing chain defect affects 2009 - 2012 V-8 engines in over 50,000 vehicles, many of them breaking catastrophically.

Good thing my car has a stick.   :2thumbs:

So the hellcat engine is supposed to have 90% different stuff in it.  I hope the timing chain isn't part of the 10%.
HHmmm their is a delay in ordering :scratchchin:  Glad my hellcat hasn't been built yet.

As the former owner of a 09 Ram and a 13 Ram I was quiet concerned when the first cars starting having issues.
The problem seems limited to the cars ATM, challenger mostly.
I haven't read of any issues on the ram forums with the trucks.

As for the SRT's and Hellcat specifically they don't use MDS or have cylinder deactivation features. 8cylinders all the time on SRT products as far as I know, and the Hellcat for Ceratin. As well as stated the stick cars don't have that feature.

I put 160,000 kms on my 09 and 35,000 on my 13 both motors were flawless. My daughters 12 ram with the 5.7 has over 230,000kms so far with No issues....

There are Millions of those engines out there now, really not many effected when looking at the big picture..

ws23rt

From what I've read as of yet the exact cause of the timing chain failure hasn't been pin pointed. I could be wrong on this.

The failures have been limited to those cars with the MDS system but to me that's just a clue to the real problem.

If indeed the MDS system is the cause it seems to point out a weakness in the timing chain assembly. :Twocents:

Ghoste

If they haven't determined the cause, how do they plan to fix it in the recall?

ws23rt

Maybe they have.  I admit I'm not up to speed on this.  Someone else may be able to answer this better.

Putting in stronger chain guide parts is what I'm aware of.  As to why the MDS system caused this  :shruggy:

Cutting out some of the cylinders will have an affect on the harmonics of the engine and could possibly shake the crap out of the timing chain at some frequency's ---Again this problem has been here for a while and I'm sure the propeller heads have spent much time on it.

I would feel better if the science of how this happens were explained.

So Rams are not affected by the recall? The article doesn't list Rams, either.
That's good to hear. Weird, my '11 Ram is equipped with MDS as well. Maybe a call to the dealer is in order, just in case?  :scratchchin:

My '11 Ram has a 5.7 as well with MDS, maybe I should just order the Hellcat now before, y'know.

any new info? the article is 2 months old...   :shruggy:
I've never owned anything but a MoPar. Can you say that?

SRT-440

This recall is been going on for like over a year now and only affects the 5.7 not the 6.1 or 6.4 or 6.2.

And my '12 SRT8 has the cylinder deactivation...but you can have it turned off with a custom tune. But, the timing chain issue isn't related...from what I hear its a defect in the actual chain that causes it to fail.

So, a batch of bad 'uns escaped from the vendor...
Hmm, who makes them for Chrysler?  :scratchchin:

TheAutoArchaeologist

The problem was discovered a long time ago.

It was the timing chain tensioner.  It was metal and plastic and the jolt it would receive from going to and from MDS mode would break the plastic part off and cause the engine to go boom eventually in some 09-10 cars.  They corrected this in the newer cars, but didn't do the recall because it was random.  My 09 R/T Classic with 5.7 and MDS went 80,000+ miles with no issues.

And the guy that wrote the "blog" for Mopar Muscle got alot of the facts wrong.  So take it with a grain of salt.
