Why did they put 4.1:1 Dana's in Wing cars?

This puzzles me. I have an A12 Superbee with the Dana 4.1:1, it's absolute mayhem on the street, you are puching through the gears like theres no tomorrow and your in 4th not long after you've crossed the intersection so how would it have been any use in a Daytona/Superbird that was built for oval track, high speed, long distance racing?

Did people actually buy these cars to go drag racing in?

The street cars have nothing to do with the oval track cars, other than sharing the body panels.      The purpose of the street wing cars was to build them so the body would be legal to race on the oval tracks.  

Most powertrain performance packages from the non-wing cars carried over to the Daytona or Superbird, except that the Road Runner was not available with the 440.   Standard gear ratio with the Dana was 3.54.   The 8 3/4" rear end would usually get 3.23 or 3.55 ratios.     My Superbird got a 2.76 rear gear installed somewhere along the way early on.

The Super Track Pack got the 4.10 with a Dana, but I would not say it is very common.

Both of my XX29 cars have 4.10 Dana's........ I think the average consumer would probably be able to go quick in the streets over 145mph on the highway. But with that being said, the 4.10's were the ultimate demise of the original 440 in my Daytona. Spoke to the original owner not long after I got it and he reflected on "blowing it up"..........

Race Chargers could run a 2.76 all the way to a 6.13 for a 1/8th mile bull ring!
Keep in mind the tire size on those cars, too.   LARGE!

    I disagree that the Road Runner was not available with the 440!  Both 69 and 70 Road Runner's had the 440-4V as an option!

440 6 Pack was the only 440 available in '69 for the RR.  All the other RR's were 383's and Hemi's in '69.  In '70, all big blocks were available.

If I had to guess I would say that is from 1967 not 1969. Still does. Of note a 440 being available in a Roadrunner. If you ever see a 1970 RR that is a 440 4bbl car let me know as I will buy it and put the wing and nose back on it.

the form shows a 440-4 barrel option for a belvedere, since it's the base engine for a GTX

not sure what year that form is for, but it's not 1970, or else there would be a 440-6 barrel column

This one is 4 speed with an 8 3/4 rear end (Not a Dana as required behind a 440 4 speed).

1970 Moulin Rouge Plymouth Roadrunner - FM-3 ( Moulin Rouge ) paint code. One of 97 Moulin Rouge Roadrunners produced. This car is equipped with a 440ci. 4bbl.HP. big block.
