My understanding is that some are still out there hiding.  Are all of the 71 models accounted and its some 70's missing or what?

All the 71 models are accounted for.  BUT Export cars never really had a good number of how many were produced.  So more could pop up over time.  Just like the "french" one that claimed to be #12 or something and was found to be a fake, but the story behind it could be legit.

Not all 70 Hemi Cuda verts have been accounted for.  A handful are known to have been crushed/destroyed.

That's my reaction as well.

There is one that was bought by a guy I met in NJ in the early 80's. I was looking for a Charger body back then & had placed a wanted ad in the Want Ad Press. My plan was to put my drive train in a rust free car since mine was getting rough. This guy was selling his Charger because he bought a '71 Hemi Cuda ragtop that was a basket case he was "going to fix up" by using a nice 318 car. He told me flat out that his plan was to move the VIN & the drive train over to the 318 car & scrap the rusted out Hemi car. I have no idea what became of it, but this crap was going on over 30 years ago just for the bragging rights of a rare car.

His Charger was too expensive at the time & after a few months of not finding one I opened my search to all B-Bodies. This is when another person contacted me & offered me a set of tags & a clean title to a GTX he parted & scrapped. Aside from this nimrod not reading the ad & seeing that I needed THE ACTUAL BODY, I passed on this, too. I don't care what experts or gurus have to say, which magazine publishes whatever "facts" there are about how many were made, how many are left, or which ones are real. Knowing what this guy was planning & the fact that I was offered a clean title & set of tags leaves me with doubt as to any of the cars that were "restored" are real.   :eyes:

And I think that applies to a vast number of collector cars.

HANDM

It's only illegal if you get caught........

It's quite troubling if you really think about it, that quite a few of the ultra rare cars could actually be rebodies..... :-\

myk

I'm all about 'modding older cars but re-bodying cars and moving VINs around is wrong, IMO...
