HI!

Have been reading a lot of the problems here at the forum about the alternators and regulators.

We started my fully restored car last nigth, we did the break in of the engine etc.
I noticed that the amp meter was on 40+
I tested the battery post and it read 12.6 v
also the stud on the alternator was 12.6-12.7 v
Now after a day it wont charge at all, nothing...
The car dosent have a single old wire all is new
also alternator , regulator etc are new. what went wrong?

well Tony I'm no expert here but 40+ amps is ok if your alternator has about 40+ amp output, the alternator should push about 13 volts. the battery should be about 12.5 ish volts.

I think a little more info is needed.

is the alternator belt nice and tight, pulley the right diameter. you said this is a fresh restoration, did you mess with the ammeter in the dash. what about your grounds. did you change or update anything under the hood that is electrical etc.

Were you killing the battery trying to start it? and it didn't charge after that.

I'm sure more qualified people will chime in here, i'll be interested to see what happens. stay tuned.

The instruments are all restored, the ground wires are all new, and checked ang good ground there is.
The pulley on alternator are all stock.
The battery are new and never went out when we started the car.
New volt regulator with date stamp from yearone , not mechanical
New ballast etc all from year one

can the fusible link cause this?

I think a toasted fusible link would be very apparent.

The high ammeter reading and the low volt reading suggests to me that something is drawing a lot of current. Are there any high-draw devices like cooling fan, etc?

I know you said "restored" but that word has lost its meaning.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

You didnt really provide enough information to formulate a good idea of whats going on.

Please post EXACTLY the chain of events.

Its possible that the car was never charging at all.  You could have the - and + switched on the amp meter and have a strong battery/meter out of wack a bit.

Unhook one of the battery terminals.
Charge the battery to the point where it will start the car but not to much with a battery charger.
Reconnect the battery terminal.

Meter the Voltage at the battery with the car OFF.   You should get 11+ Volts to 12.5 ish

Start the car, meter it again at the battery.    The voltage should now be up .5+ volts from whatever you had when you did it the first time.

Tell us what happened.
