Was wondering if anyone has placed any sort of barrier against the painted metal surface of the door before installing the door panel. I've heard through car buddies of them placing plastic or tar paper or tyvek....never did think about it until now that I will be looking into installing in the near future the new door panels I bought. I'm not sure how these Charger's came from factory, cause my original door panels were off the Charger when I bought it. Any comments, anyone? Thanks.   ???

a clear sheet of plastic stuck to the metal and held on at the top with the scewed on stainless trim between door panel and upper door pad on my 69 ( door  panels had never been off  the plastic was still like day 1)

Thanks Tan Top, When you mean clear, you mean opaque - like drop cloth paint type plastic or saran type clear?

the plastic is thicker than 3M's static masking sheet, but thinner than the plastic that goes under a concrate floor, same sort of stuff though , clear shrink wrap type stuff.  hope this helps.

The plastic sheeting was a vapor barrier to protect the cardboard door panels from warping.....

Exactly.

It also keeps mold and mildew from forming in the upholstery from the dampness the panel board can accumilate over time.

When I first got my 71 I had a buddy do some work on it. Of course it was raining when I picked it up. I had the door panels off at the time. I could not believe how much water came up through the weep holes on the bottom of the doors. The bottom 1/3 of the door was wet on the inside from a 10 mile drive.

Actually a lot of the water passes through bad window rubber seals or the glass felts as some people call them, if the rubber seals worn you'll always have water in the doors.

Sorry bringing this thread back from the dead...(but hey, I used the search button!)...

Does anyone have a source to get the 'correct' (or pretty close) material to replace the plastic vapor barrier between the body and the door pannels?

Or you can use Dynamat and reduce sound levels inside car.
I did that, and it worked great.

At our shop we use a plastic that is self-adhesive, something like this: http://www.americover.com/auto_aid_collision_wrap_687_prd1.htm

I bought mine from e-bay, suppose to be like the originals. It fit nice and a good product.

This guy sells them.

Make sure you tuck the bottom of the plastic sheet into the slots in the bottom of the door so whatever water gets onto the inside of the plastic runs down into the bottom of the door and out the drain holes, kinda like making sure your shower curtain is on the inside of the tub.

On my '71, the original plastic was held on with spots of tar-like glue. You could reposition the plastic and stick it back to the glue.

Mine on my 70 RR were held on with what appeared to be white butyl tape.
