Great spirits have always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds. The mediocre mind is incapable of understanding the man who refuses to bow blindly to conventional prejudices and chooses instead to express his opinions courageously and honestly.  ~A. Einstein

my holley hp double pumper works great (4 speed manual)

I like the Holley style double pumper but that is not necessarily the best application for every 440. Need to know more about the engine combination and rear end gearing, stall speed etc....

I just replaced my Eddy 800 with a Demon 750. My 440 now has much better low rpm manners.

Stock engaine ,727 Auto  and 8 3/4 rear end. So the Holly 750 is the best ?

If the engine truly is stock and has 3.23 gears I would lean towards a proform 750 vacuum secondary carb  :yesnod:

"Best" is in the eye of the beholder, if you have a stocker and want the best drivability you'd be wise to stay in the 600-650 cfm range.

If performance is desired more than drivability go bigger.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

It took me a while to do the setup procedure but I have the best of both worlds with my old Thermoquad!  My 440 loves that carb.

I'd buy a composite body street demon if this one failed.

Well of course the best that you seek for your application is still the six pack carbs and intake, as I mentioned in your other post.  Apparently you are talking just about a 4bbl carb/intake.  If you are going with the CH4B, then you should be specifically looking at single 4bbl square bore carbs.  Although I do really like a good running TQ or Holley spreadbore on a stockish 440, I would not screw around with adaptors for the intake.

I probably have 15 carbs and have tried and used more and can honestly say I've never had a problem with any of them that could not be simply tuned out.

If you are not a tuner and just want to screw it on and close the hood and have it run perfect,  I suggest that you take your advice solely from those that have done exactly what you are doing with a motor as close to yours as possible that have had success, as the results are specific to the motor.

Over the years, on stockish 383s and 440s, I have run most versions of both factory and Edelbrock AFBs and AVSs and liked them all, with one exception, the Edelbrock 750 AFB.  Also, I have never found any measureable performance improvement with a Holley VS over a Carter/Edelbrock of comparable size.  Also I have found that the Holley 4779 actually works very very well, and not only on a stockish 440, but just about any stockish motor with a dual plane intake, or modified high performance engines with a single plane intake.

Good luck

X2!!! Have had good AFB's and AVS's but never any luck with eddy's AFB 750. The best carb I had on my charger was a 4779 holley. The best carb I had on my old ford truck I restored was a 600 edelbrock. Has anybody tried either of the summit racing carbs??? Wonder if they are any good for the money??
