I have a original matching numbers 383.

When its parked for a few days it need some turns before it starts..
The engine is delivered as 2bbl, now fitted with carter avs 4bbl. I think the inside of engine is original.
Nothing start problems when its warm.
If i put the "pedal to the metal" fast it often have a backfire before it runs strongly.. No backfire if I'm gently on the accelerator.
When i drives on highways or some gently cruising between 30-50 mph the temp is ok, about 180-190.
But if there are some uphill "racing" or a long hillclimb in slow speed the temp goes up to 200-220..

What do you recomend? Timing and tuning? Or carb change?

The leaf spring is also very soft and they are flat.
Which leaf springs and shock absorbers do you recomend on my car? Like them a bit high, looks meaner!

It sounds like it starts like a mopar  started in 1970.

I'm not the resident expert here by any means, but, I would start by having the radiator boiled.

Tmb84

Do you mean clean/flush it? Changed the thermostat and that helped a bit.

The coolant is green and little groomsy.. Thinking of changing it and use 25% coolant.

No.  Take it out of the vehicle.  Radiator shop will clean/repair/recondition.

Carb may need to be re-jetted. Sounds like it may be lean.

I agree with Strip as far as cooling.

How many miles on the 383? Yes tuning and timing will help with the back fire when you stomp on the gas. Carters can be a pain to tune if you don't know them, and I don't.

My self I like Holley's but if you find someone that knows Carter's they can make them run pretty good.

Im not sure if its lean, on choke there is a lot of black exhaust behind the car and fast idling. It also uses pretty much gas.. About 10-15 mpg, city/highway

But im new into this v8's

Im gonna have it checked at a local shop. But he is expert on fords and the other shop around is experts in chevys :rotz:

Just passed 60000 miles.

Any suggestion on the suspension issue?

do you have a spring maker/blacksmiths shop anywhere nearby ?

if your not in the US it would be cheaper to have your originals reset  and re-ached. maybe raise the rear an inch or so , don't go overboard or it won't handle   :Twocents:

Thanks for all inputs :2thumbs:

Gonna remanufacture the radiator and change the coolant.

Gonna call the Ford guy soon and have a tune upp.

About the leaf spring im not sure there is any blacksmith shop around.. So i need to check around..

Any thoughts on summit springs?

If any of the larger trucks in your country (sorry I forgot which one) have leaf springs, then there is probably a shop that rebuilds them.   However, it's name probably won't reflect it.   I would check with a large truck repair facility.  They might be able to point you in the right direction.

As far as the starting issue. If it's stock, I would address the backfire first.  I never experienced a mopar, back-in-the-day, that would start on the first crank cold.    It was mostly; crank, pump , pump, crank, pump, pump, crank, start.

The best part is/was the mopar starter sounds like its laughing at you while refusing to start. ;)

You could always buy a set of Super Stock leaf Springs from Mancini Racing? LEON.

I would love to but the $600 to $900   shipping   :eek2:    just makes this impossible

anyone from outside the US has to add shipping + whatever taxes their particular country adds to this  so those $ 400 springs are now 1K +    :Twocents:

Carter AVS carbs are infamous for a bog or flat spot when punching the accelerator.
This is easily tuned out for quick & responsive acceleration.  Your backfire seams to
me to be more likely a gummed up mechanical advance in the distributor or anything
in the timing event & not fuel delivery at all.  A really good tune up will surprise you!
Black exhaust & fast idling are not good either - so the carb does need tuning as well.
At 60,000 miles a timing chain is also good preventative maintenance - but ask your
Ford guy to check the timing chain slack at the distributor rotor.  What this entails is
moving the distributor cap aside & hand turning the crank in 1 direction until the rotor
begins to move, then turn the crank in the other direction paying close attention to
how far the crank rotates until the distributor rotor begins to turn.  They should move
hand in hand.  Any delay from the rotor is a measure of timing chain slack.

I believe mechanically inclined is not a matter of anything more than a strong will to
learn!

I will ask the mechanic about this things.. Thanks alot  :2thumbs:

Few years ago i think something has been done to the engine because the inlet manifold and heads got some new paint. The block is dirty and most likely never been painted since new.

Adding a picture of block/heads
