Another 69 Heater box/AC question

My heater core was shot so I bought one off Ebay. The coils stick up 1/4 inch higher from the backplate than the original. This is causing the valve to be pushed down into the fins on the core and it won't go down all the way. Anyone ever use one of these replacement jobs? Is there another alternative? My original was pretty corroded and leaking in multiple places. Or does anyone rebuild the old ones? Here's some pics of the problem.

My local guy  said If I needed one they could fix it .  Not cheap but at least it can be done IF the shop wants to do it

Fortunately,,,the few A/C boxes I've done I have not needed one,,,yet
