A guy I know is cleaning up a junkyard in southern WI that has been closed for quite awhile. All cars were 1980's or older.
I brought a trailer just in case and hauled this beast home. Not an easy project by any means but I didn't want to see it crushed.
I have some extra doors, trunk lids and a few hoods. So another shell laying around isn't going to hurt.
There's a motor and trans in the car. 383 and 727 auto. The engine and trans have matching numbers stamped on the top of the bell housing area.
There's no vin tag or fender tag so cant say for sure if the motor is original.
I lightly sanded the top of the core support looking for the VON but doesn't seem to have ever had one stamped.
I posted the number from the trunk weather strip gutter. It doesn't look like it was ever repainted. Visors are blue.
Roof is solid around windshield. Cowl is dented in.

Kind of makes me reconsider that one I posted about. Although you probably didn't pay 2k for it.

Thanks for saving it! Even if you don't restore it yourself  someone may want to buy it from you later.

The charger world thanks you for saving one more, original B5 blue car?

That's assuming that there's any frame left.

I know this car!  Wow, your friend is cleaning him out?!  I just drove by there after SDAC and saw that they had already cleaned out a big swath.

I have a picture of that car sitting in the yard somewhere.

Good luck!  I'm just down the road in Milton on weekends

Edelbroke

Yes, he was hired by the widow of the owner, well I guess she's sole owner now. I was there Saturday, they were clearing paths where trees grew up trough lanes. Everything is for sale. I've got a pic of it in the yard too but it makes me kinda sick. I'm sure it was moved here and damaged more by the loader and then more cars piled on the front. He said there were more Chargers but I couldn't find any and I walked around all day. Saw a few fast back Mustangs :scratchchin:

I don't think this Charger is B5 blue. It looks darker, and no usable frame material. Might just be a roof donor

Baldwinvette77

Give it to stevearino, he'll just stick it on top of a hellcat challenger or something  :shruggy:

Yikes! A little rougher than your 383 4 speed.

Yep, that will be a challenging rebuild. Without VIN/Fender tags and not knowing if the eng/trans is matching, would be up-side-down trying to go original. I assume they make reproduction frame rails and floor pans - maybe the pro touring/resto-mod route is the way to go with this one?

Wow.. that's a project.

I thought it was an under the fallen 'barn find'.

Good luck, at least you got some parts to go with it.

There used to be a white 70 Charger over on the far west side of the yard.  It was completely picked over like the blue one though.

Thought the same thing. Its rusty art.

The VIN would most likely be XP29B8X202838 based on the partial on the trunk weather strip gutter and the standard Charger prefix of XP29, or it could be an XS29, depends of options I think.  I had a similar Charger back in the day but mine had a white vinyl top.

Getting a legitimate title will be difficult but not impossible.

I was under the impression that in 68 the number on the trunk rail and the radiator core support were called the VON or vehicle order number. There is a box all its own on the broadcast sheet for this number and the VIN is different.

And on 69 and up the number is the last 6 digits of the vin. Am I wrong?

Benji

sdweatherman

Edelbroke, you are on the right track. As I understand it from the threads that are posted on this subject - 1968 model year stampings are different than 69 and up stampings.

For 1968, the full VIN was not put on the Fender Tag - Just the first 4 digits of the VIN are on the Fender Tag - example - XP29. The six digit number at the bottom right of the Fender Tag that looks like a VIN sequence number, is actually the Sequence Order (SO) number. The stampings on the trunk lip and the radiator support will match this SO number that is on the Fender Tag.

The stampings that are on the engine and transmission are the ones that should match up with the VIN of the car. So if the engine and trans that you have are original to the car, then that would give you a clue as to what the VIN of the car would be.

The only way to tie together the VIN and SO numbers on this car is to find the broadcast sheet or window sticker.

I am not an expert - I am only tying together what has been explained in previous threads - please correct me if anything I have posted is not correct.

Thanks, Scott.
