I passed on several other B bodys back in the day that were priced much lower and in better driveable condition, but I wanted that roach of a Charger for some reason..... Could of bought myself a nice roadrunner 383 4 speed for the money
Greetings from Belgium, the beer country

NOS is nice, turbo's are neat, but when it comes to Mopars, there's no need to cheat...

The "Dodge Charger game" isn't one that's played well without lots of cash....just sayin'.

Unless you have the time, talent, and patience of chaos52 (and others like ridelikehell who immediately comes to mind) who have taken a rock of coal and turned it into a diamond...

It's better to learn the ropes on a smaller scale then move up.   :Twocents: :Twocents:

Amazing! :o

Reading this thread is far too tempting...

Who looking for a Charger wouldn't grab that car!  :brickwall: :RantExplode:

That car is just outside of Toronto, a few minutes away from me. Hmmm...

If you are under the spell of a 68-70 charger, don't get anything else. No dart will do.
You will only be happy with a charger. Might as well pay up and get it over with.
It may cost more to buy in but you will not lose money unless you overpay for the car.

True but generally speaking. A less desirable mopar or a charger has the same costs of ownership, upkeep and repair.
The only difference would be the charger cost more to buy but it brings more when you sell.

Ghoste

True, you should always buy for fun but if you can a smart investment as well, then its gravy.

Do you guys think that one of these ideas would be better than trying to find a 68 or 70?

Find a good 72 rallye and build it up say spend 8000 then take 5 to make it a very cool pro touring car.

Or buy a nice 71 440 and then make it into a 71 R/T clone like add the doors hood and wing and the awsome pistol grip shifter.

Those are my 3rd gen ideas  :shruggy:
LOOKING FOR THE ONE :)

Add the doors, hood and pistol grip shifter to a 71?  Now there's some serious cash to throw down.

Drove by this today...

I agree with your year choices but you may want to start pricing things out.  5k does not get you far in the resto world.  All and all you will have to priortize whats important with that budget.  For example, title taxes etc., brakes, fuel system, wheels tires, engine rebuild, trans rebuild, rear end rebuild, etc.  First and foremost make the car safe and reliable and then move to other things.

I'd say maxing out to 8K for a '72 rallye is going to get you a car in the same condition as a 15K 68/70.  But, I'm sure there are some out there somewhere.

'74 Rallye 4spd (WH23L4) (1 of 94)
'74 Rallye Auto (WH23L4) (quad black)
'69 Swinger 340 - 4spd
'70 Duster 340 - 4spd

Daytona R/T SE posted this a ways back and I think it's solid advice.  A 2nd-gen Charger is probably out of your budget right now and you're kidding yourself otherwise.  In a couple of years when your parents ease you out the door it'd be nice to have a life and options instead of being car-broke.

The best advice I can give a 16 year old wanting an old car is...

Wait until you're at least 30.

Take your money and buy the nicest, most reliable late model car or truck you can afford.

Something that you can drive reliably everyday, all the way through high school and college.

Something that you can be proud of and depend on now.

An old car will suck up all of your money and all of your free time.

That's time you should spend with friends, family, chasin' chicks and working on your education, and ultimately your career.

Later in life, after you've established yourself with a home of your own and a good solid income...

THAT is the time to think about an old car.

NOT before.

This is the advice I would give myself, if I could go back to '79 and slap the 16 year old me upside the head.  :slap:

I would then emphasize my point with a swift kick in my own ass. :nutkick: :spank: :nono:

These cars can be a lot of fun, but they can also distract you from what you really should be doing.

I'm still paying the price for this.

Every day.

And will be for the rest of my life.

Thanks for telling us what it is you're looking for :2thumbs:

The 72 idea sounds good.  The 5k for pro touring upgrades won't get you very far though.  Wheels and tires alone will eat up half your budget.  A disc brake upgrade will eat a grand easy.  That doesn't give you very much to fix any areas that need addressing.

Building a 71 R/T clone will get expensive quick.  The doors and power bulge hood command big bucks.  They do make a fiberglass power bulge hood for less money.  The 440 should be fairly easy to get, but I think that you should also consider the 383/ 400 as well.  Being big blocks, parts will interchange making a 440 swap later on less expensive and less of a headache.  I would not make the spoilers a deal breaker. They're inexpensive and can easily be added on.  In fact, that could be a Christmas/ birthday gift idea for someone wanting to contribute to your car.  Getting a 4 spd. is will probably be your hardest part.  Auto Grip does make a Pistol Grip for the automatic that will give you the same look( another gift idea), or you could go with a 5 spd. conversion from companies like Silver Sport Transmissions that bolt in and give you a manual trans, but they are expensive.  http://shiftsst.com/
