Make your own speaker pods.

I've been trying to figure out how/where to get some good speakers mounted up in the front of my 70 Charger. After looking high and low for years and just this year deciding to ditch the whole console thing for a Winters Sidewinder between the seats more or less that left the ideal spot, the hump under the center of the dash.
Well nobody makes any kind of anything to mount to that oddball shape so here is what I cooked up. I ordered a set of Deitz Headlight Buckets from here as they had the best price:  http://www.reidsrodparts.com/ELEC2.html# (Scroll down the page to the bottom.)
All I had to do was cut two rings out of 1/2 (6 ply because it's better.) plywood using the templates that came with my speakers and the trim ring that holds a light in the bucket, if ya get the cuts just right everything just fits nicely right where the bulb would sit.

Those look really great. But those pods, did I read that right, $399  :o

For now I just used the bucket mounts to just stick them to each other but the right diameter and length hunk of some kind of pipe could be used to change the distance apart if paired or making up some other mounting would be easy. I plan on mounting them up by the hump somewhere out of the way after new carpet later this year or putting one to the far right of the passengers foot well area with the other centered, whatever fits with the space allowed from the Classic Auto Air A/C-Heat going in later.
This "kinda" the target area, they are just laid down as is. (You can see I'd need to pair them right next to each other tightly by using a short pipe as a spacer.)

Oh no! Scroll down to the bottom, about 52 bucks shipped. I'm too cheap, this was hundreds less than buying real speaker pods like boats use. I got these speakers from Crutchfield Audio on a buy one set of 2 and second set free, shipping is always free there. The spec's on the speakers are very good they should work great with just the 50 watt X 4 stereo with no amp needed. (Infinity Reference 6502ix) I modified my rear deck for the same by plating over with 20ga. sheet steel after trimming the factory holes as needed. (Then covering that with self stick matting.)

I did just notice in the link what I bought was listed as "in primer" yet they are a nice textured low gloss black finish that I'm just going to leave as is. Anyway they are a well made set, the steel is formed very nice and is thicker than I'd even hoped for. I was thinking of "porting" them but a quick study shows the subject is tricky at best so I'll just try them as is soon. (Chrome would be the cat's ass in a street rod!)

That's a very clever idea B5. Well done. Man, we have some talent here abouts.  :2thumbs:
