Limited limitor?

I'm not sure of the accuracy of my voltage limiter. I believe it works, but I have no way of checking the accuracy.

He are my observations:

Fuel-works but stays "full" for longer than it should then drops pretty quickly below half
Oil-works, but pegs "High" on start and then settles down to the middle after warm
Temp-work but the reading seem low-ish. The gauge seems to settle around the 1/4 mark
Alternator- does not seem to move. No nothing nada.

Maybe normal, maybe not?

Hi Bill,

It could be a bad instrument voltage limiter. They usually fail by welding their contacts together and putting 12 volts on the gauges. It's hard to measure the actual voltage average coming out of the limiter and requires a very special type of meter that I haven't seen in years. You can use a regular voltmeter but all you will see is a pulsing action and not a real voltage value. You can disconnect the temperature sensor wire and measure the voltage from there to ground and you should see the pulsing.

I think by 75 Chrysler may have gone over to a shunt type ammeter and they are not very responsive. A factory service manual would be very helpful in tracking down the issues you are having.

Well, I took off a bit early from work and shortly found myself in my garage, beer in hand with a volt meter.

I got the "pulsing" reading so I guess I'm good on that.

So, I guess my gauges are what they are?

on my cars, all 3 Chargers, the fuel gauge moves slower from full to half way....then drops faster from half to empty

and my other oil & temp gauges act the same way

your ammeter may be bad...I have seen this a lot on the cars like yours
