Boating season is here and that made me think I'd like to purchase a boat myself. What do you guys have, how do you like it?
I'm looking at older jet daycruisers. Any pros/cons to these, Ive read bunch of good reviews about them vs outboard boats.

If you are going to buy a boat/ship....perhaps something that can carry your Charger would be in order.  Then again having your own drag strip would be a bonus!   :D

Ok, maybe not that great for most lakes....but it would make your car buddies stand up and notice! :2thumbs:

Just kidding....I would love to find one of the old Chrysler boats form the 1960's/70's to tow behind my Charger..................(saw a picture of them in an old MCG)

I'd like one of those Chrysler boats too, that or one of those things from the 50's with the fins like the cars had then.

I haven't had a jet boat, but I have an old (1979) 19 foot sleekcraft tunnel with a 3 liter outboard that I am trying to get back in the water.  They also put inboards and jets on these.  The boat rides flat on the water, but didn't have enough power with a 2.4 L on it to really get up and go.  I will see what the 3 liter 2 cycle does, but suspect that is why they were typically run with big blocks.

My dad is the one with the boats, but all outboard.  He has 2 older action marine (17 and 18 foot) with similar engines.  They are better because they lift out of the water nicely.

We also have a D utility (runabout) from the late 50's that we also have hopes of getting running with an older (smaller) engine.

The problem is that I don't live on the water (my dad does) and so I don't get much time to work with them.

Are you looking for a slightly larger boat.

(I'll try to dig up a more conventional boat pic).

That is what I thought you were describing.  My experience has been on slightly smaller boats.  With the smaller boats (outboards) the transom can start to detach in some cases and that is a place to look.  I don't see this being an issue with an inboard.  Unfortunately, I do not know what to look for with them, but I would look for something that was clean, trailer kept, and freshwater.  We always flushed our engines with water from the hose after going out.  If you are at all concerned about any cracks, I remember looking for them using a black light.  I would look for any rot below seats so you know what you have and inspect for corrosion with cables used for steering and running the engine.  As far as how they run on the water, I would try them out.  My dad was always good at finding people who had a boat design he liked and then talking with them about their boat and sometimes getting them to take him out to see how they behaved on the water.

I have a 1995 Celebrity 190BR bought it last year knowing it had engine problems it had a 4.3 Mercruiser (same 4.3 as the ones in any S-10 or Blazer) I rebuilt the motor, block was cracked picked a used 4.3 up for $150.00 one good thing about Chevy is they are cheap to rebuild!! had $1000 in it totally rebuilt! went through the outdrive as well, really not all that difficult just a few specialty tools were required (engine alignment bar, and a couple tools for the outdrive) Just took all the stripes off of it and compund and buffed the gelcoat.. It is named "The Black Pearl"  :icon_smile_big:

Yeah, If you are not a mechanic a boat is a losing venture for sure. I only have $3000 in mine though and although that is not counting my labor that is the purchase of the boat, rebuilt motor and outdrive.

Yep!  :icon_smile_wink:

My wife and I spent quite a while looking at boats to purchase. Hung around the local marina's talking to people, etc. We were living in Northwest Indiana at the time, on the southern tip of Lake Michigan. Boating season is all of 3 months long there. Of that 3 months take out bad weather days, work, family, etc. The boat would spend more time on the trailer than in the water, yet the payment is due every month.

Decided to buy a sports car instead.

The only water ride I had was a 3 seater jetski(personal water craft),it was an old dinosaur,1995 Polaris SLT 750.Slow,handled like crap, did I say slow, etc. But was inexpensive, was reliable, fun, and when I sold it I got just about what I paid for it.
It is in the thoughts about getting another as the kids are older now and would be able to go on.

Horses ain't that bad of a money eater. An airplane will bankrupt you a lot faster. BTW I don't know anyone in the middle class who could afford a airplane. :Twocents:

I have a mate here in Australia who is doing just that, he sourced a few old Chrysler outboards and is going to paint up an old 70's ski boat the same colour as his Aussie Charger and tow it around to car shows. He's even managed to find genuine Chrysler dash guages and fuel tank for the boat and I think he might even have a three spoke steering wheel for it too. Chrysler made everything you would need for boating back in the 70's and there's still a lot around.
