I bought this 73 Charger with a great running 318 4V. The 904 transmission had no reverse and included a small block 727 tranny and drive shaft. I was "told" the tranny "should" be good, so I installed it. But the 727 drive shaft takes the large U-joint, and the 8 1/4 differential takes the small U-joint. Can anybody tell me what I need to do.
My guess is that I will have to either change the yoke in the rear end ( If that is easy enough to do, and if I can get one that fits the 8 1/4 non-posi rear, and also fits into the larger 727 drive shaft. OR I will have to have the drive shaft customized to the smaller end to fit the rear end yoke....??? That may be cost prohibitive..???
OR get an 8 3/4 rear end.....OR just find another 904 tranny and start all over!
I do not really want to invest a lot into this until I know for sure if the tranny is good, but I have to have a drive shaft to find out....everything else is ready!
Perhaps a guy cannot put a 727 drive shaft into an 8 1/4 rear end, but I would not think that would be the case, but I sure do not know!
Thanks a bunch for any help with this dilemma!

You can buy what I call 'hybrid' u joints that on one side it's small and other is large.
notta big deal. Until you up the power to a big block, THEN you'll need to swap rears.

Thanks! That is a huge help! Now I will get one of those U-joints and finally find out if this tranny is good!

Yep! Thanks! I tried to get one at the local Napa store, but would have to order it, and then wait too long for it to be sent. I got a different local parts store to cross ref the Napa # and I have one ordered for Monday! Thanks for the help! Now I just hope that 727 tranny is actually good!

Since the 727 is 4" longer than the 904 I'd say the u-joint is the least of your problems....you're gonna have to shorten the shaft or get a different one.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

Sorry....I guess I forgot to mention that the 727 included the correct drive shaft....that is why I need the conversion U-joint so I can match it up with the 8 1/4 rear end....if I could have used the 904 shaft, the U-joint would not have been a problem, but the length sure would have been! But thanks for the heads up! I should be out of the woods with this particular problem soon as I pick up the U-joint from the parts store on Monday thanks to the input from the folks on this site!
