Should a 1968 Hamtramck charger be coded on the fender tag for both vinyl roof and roof color?

As I understand it the paint color on a 68 tag, the PNT stamping, is always coded for both the roof and body color. The P is for the roof color and the N for the body color. The T is for Two Tone paint of which 1 is for monotone. For example, PNT of QQ1 is for a bright blue car.

Yes

Is there any truth to what I stated above?

Yes, you are correct. For example if your ordered a gold car for 1968 with a black painted top,  the codes under PNT would be BZ2 instead of ZZ1. Broken down that means B= Black Roof, Z= Gold Body, and 2= Two Tone.  Without the "two-tone" it would be broken down as Z= Gold Roof, Z=Gold Body, and 1- Mono Tone.

That's true but the question was about '68 Charger paint and vinyl top coding.
Did you intend to open the topic to include two tone Chargers specifically or was it just a general statement about how two tone cars were coded?

Thanks all.  I had seen an older post that said that Hamtramck cars only coded the roof color if they were not coded for vinyl roof, as opposed to St. Louis cars that did code for roof color even though they were also coded for vinyl roof.  That is how I understood the post anyway.  And I did not think that was correct.  Maybe it was a typo or maybe I misunderstood it.  Just figured I would ask as it was contrary to what I thought.  Thanks again.

You are probably thinking of a thread that concerned 69 model year charger fender tags.

Not sure if you are directing that question at me or TUFCAT but in my statement I basically said yes to his question and provided more info that suggests that ALL 68 tags were coded for both, regardless of plant or model.

e.g. Your response leaves open the question or possibly the suggestion that it may be different for different plants/cars. That's all I guess I was trying to get at with my very unclear followup.   Clear as mud yet?  ;D

Yes I was.  It has been cleared up now.  The pics were of a 69 tag but the statement did not specify.  Just wanted to confirm.  Thanks.

;)

Pretty sure this car was painted from the factory but was it coded for one color or two?

Just to throw in my 2 cents.  In 1968 the vinyl roof option and the color of the vinyl is coded on the fender tag on the 2nd line from the top under the letter "Y"

4= green vinyl
6= black vinyl
7= white vinyl

If there is no number under the "Y" then the car should have a painted roof.

Here is some info for you. 1970 Chargers came in 3 models; XH - base model, XP - 500 model, XS - R/T model. You have an XP model.

M31 - See pic below. EDIT: I was wrong about no M31 on XH models as corrected by 69CoronetRT below. :blush2:

A01 - option code for several items as a package. See dealer data book info below.

TX9 - black paint on body, so the car was black originally. EDIT: I was wrong here too. Somehow I overlooked the obvious EB5 blue code. :o :brickwall:  I think the rest of my info is correct, ;D

206 - the scheduled production date, Feb 06/70. Note; this may or may not be the actual production date.

XP29 - model code for Charger 500

N - 383 engine

0 - 1970 model year

G - St. Louis production plant

M31 - See pic below. Trivia note; M31 (wide chrome trim on door and 1/4 panel by window) was not on XH models, only on XP/XS models.

TX9 - black paint on body, so the car was black originally. Inner upper door frames are black to match the C6XA interior. The EB5 code tells us the car was blue.

Thank you for the corrections. :bow: I edited my reply above. Don't know how I missed the obvious EB5 paint code.  :brickwall:
