How Much Air Cleaner/Hood Clearance?

What is the safe operating distance between the air cleaner cover and the hood?

Yesterday I spent Fathers Day putting on a CH4B, tweaking the 4429 Carter and installing a manual choke.  Air Cleaner is stock unsilenced.  I also added a 1/2 inch carb spacer.

The hood closes without touching the cover,  but is within probably about 1/2".

Is that too close, or is it "as long as the hood closes.......  :2thumbs: "       :scratchchin:

I use the RPM intake and have about the same clearance as you.  No problems in over ten years.......
13.53 @ 105.32

Re-measured.

1/16 of an inch  (the thickness of a wood paint stir stick).

Too tight?    :'(

It does seem to tight but the worst would be some chafing marks from all the flexing going on.
If you jump this car it will be worse. :D

terrible one

I'm very close, between 1/8 and 1/16" of clearance. I have done the bolt through motor mount trick and haven't had any problems.

Can you run it without the 1/2" carb spacer?
I've got a CH4B with an Eddy carb, wrinkle finish air cleaner & there has to be at least 3/4" - 1" clearance under there.

That's the next option.   :yesnod:

The spacer is there because I punched a few holes in the intake crossover blockoff, and thought I'd get ahead of any heat transfer issues.  Probably end up taking the spacer out, and see if any heat problems develop.

Haven't had a chance to go for a good test drive to check out the mods yet.  One interesting thing:  After the engine warmed up, I had to adjust the idle down a little bit.....it picked up a couple hundred RPM somehow.  (my carb tweaking didn't include any mixture/idle changes...just jets and needle/seat changes)  Maybe it's running more efficient with the carb/intake mods.   :scratchchin:

You can massage the base into a drop base. I've done this many times when only needing a small amount. You will know how much you went by the threaded rod sticking up further.

I have a spare base.    :scratchchin:

What is the best way to 'massage'?

Find a coffe can of something like that ,that's close to the size of the carb opening set it on there and push the outer part down. Try to go slow and easy.

Ummm.....I kinda bent it up a little bit, but I've got a good idea to try next week when we get back from the lake.
