Or whatever you call them, I see on some these actually rest on the rear valance, mine do not.  Thoughts?

comet_666

We moved rear bumper in about 1/2 inch in this pic but they still don't conform to the valance.

It looks like the guards hang down a bit from the valance yes? Is this the original bumper and guards?

Is the bumper fully tightened to the car in these pictures?

If so, my suggestion would be to loosen all the bumper bolts.....4 of them right?

Then get the bumper guards bracket bolts started, have someone hold the bumper up into place
as much as possible and begin tightening all the bolts a little bit at a time until the bumper
assembly is drawn into place.

As I recall the guards on my car did not sit flush with the valance during reassembly either.  :shruggy:

That may be the issue, the entire back half of the car is new, everything.
The guards themselves don't necessarily hang down but do not sit against the bumper at all, they stick out about an inch.

Do you have the mounting plates that bolt under the car? They provide mounting for the exhaust tips and the bumperettes.
I do not see them poking out underneath...  :scope:

Not sure exactly what those are, but I do not believe so. looks like these things bolt just under the valance right behind the gas tank.

Here's a thread on them, looks like they are in the works from AMD:

Used ones have been commanding sick money. They are commonly found rusted or missing altogether. ALL '68 - '70 Chargers had them whether equipped with dual exhaust or not.
The exhaust tip hanger tab slips in the little square to secure it and a bolt on the other side. The bumperette bolt slips thru the long extended section. You can see how they mount in the pics.

Then no I do not have them. I remember they were there before removing all the rotted steel.
My guards do however bolt in right where these do.

Cant realy tell from the pictures, but I have the idea that your bumpers sits pretty high.
Is the gap at the underside of the bumper normally that big?

Bill, you sure the exhaust tip brackets have anything to do with the fixation of the bumperettes?

This answer another question for me : I was thinking should I test fit the rear bumper before paint since I also have alot of new sheetmetal on there. I guess that is a yes....

You're right. Probably they don't do much locating the bumperettes, but the bolt does pass thru them into the crossmember.
Looking at the pics again, yeah the bumper may also be a smidge high. If it's lowered a bit it might tuck the bumperettes further under the car.

And YES, test fit your rear bumper prior to paint!  :yesnod:

The bumperette bolts into a u clip on the bracket Bill is speaking of. It sandwiches the crossmember slot in the process.

Thanks, Brian. I was going by memory (which hasn't been the greatest).
I couldn't remember whether the U-clip was in the crossmember or that bracket, but did remember that it does have something to do with that bumperette bolt.
Thanks again for clearing that up!

Oh, I didn't notice it was high but now that makes sense and it does look slightly high. It proved to be a major headache getting it to where it is now. Car has replacement everything in the rear, even bumper brackets are new and were absolute crap quality and had to be extensively modified.

You're right, got home after work and dove right into my pile of parts since I was a bit intrigued by this.
You would'nt notice once the exhaust is in place but thece brackets are quite large...

One step further : mine are cacked with undercoating, wich I personally dont like all that much, altough the car will receive undercoating again I might consider to put them on after undercoating the rest of the underside. Should I paint them body color or something like iron gray? just an idea?

I usually make them look like bare steel.

had the same issue with mine,
but i liked where i had the bumper fitted , like a lot  it took some doing , but in the right spot,
solution take guards off , remove strap or modify it , lengthen it to suit ,
i also did this before chrome plating

I am probably missing something here, probably the year of the cars, But the picture above provided by comet_666 shows the attachment of the bumperette.
