Bobby Isaac and Charlie Glotzbach testing DC-93 (#88) on it's first speedway test with the nose and wing.
This mention is from Autoweek dated 8-23-69.

It would be nice to find a photo of the drivers with the car at that test.
I've never owned anything but a MoPar. Can you say that?

Glotzbach on the wing was taken at the Chelsea Proving Grounds, July 13th. 1969.
Buddy Baker was on the other side.   Car ran 203 on the 4.77 mile track.

Speaking of urban legends, Charlie running 240+ at Chelsea is another one that won't die.

See the yaw 'pipe' on the roof?   Same device on the car when Allison ran 197. at Daytona Int. Speedway

TUFCAT

Was that installed for the wind tunnel test usage, or did it help air stream at high speeds?

Aero426

It is part of the data acquisition package.  It could be used in the tunnel, on track, or on the 3/8 scale models.

Correct, that device measures the yaw of the car in the corner.
That can be simulated in a tunnel, too.

Aero426

This is an example of a yaw meter as used on the #88.    Only the pipe portion was visible above the body work.

These came directly from the Chrysler rocket program in Huntsville.

pettybird

so, how fast did the car really go that day?  seems like a C500 race car with a bum carburetor should do 185 at Chelsea...

Aero426

Air slits in the probe portion of the yaw meter.   I am not sure if the tube rotated within the body of the meter, or that the air flow pressurized the tube and something happens inside the body of the instrument.

DC-93 ran 203 with a "small" carb, not a Dominator.    Actually, the same size carb can be seen on the Show Car #6.

Note, there are 2 slots on it. It appears they would be lined up like this "V" facing the front or perhaps
like this, "^" , the dual slots facing the rear of the car.   They would zero it on the straights.  At low speeds in the turns there is no yaw.
but, at higher speeds, the back end hangs out!!!! The difference in pressure on each slot would be recorded
and the yaw angle calculated.   Pretty cool device.
