Basic Questions on Replacing Headers

Last year my rusty header sprung a couple wholes where the previous owner either hit a speed bump or just pounded them flat towards the bottom side for clearance.  Anyhow, I want to replace them with new ones.  I'm just thinking ahead of what I will need for the job and how I should go about it.  I know the exhaust from the headers back was custom done, so I am assuming I may have to cut/modify this at a muffler shop once I get the headers on.  This is on a crate 318 that pretty young in a 73.  I was thinking of getting the headers from JCWhitney since I have no budget for this and they were cheap.
1 - Would they come with new gaskets automatically or will I need to buy a set somewhere? Then how do you match them up?
2 - Do you use anything between the gaskets and the surfaces, or just clean them up real well?
3 - What ways are there to keep them from rusting out?  I don't drive it in the winter, but it does gather perspiration in its shelter over the winter. Are ceramic coating the only real good way? Or is there something I could do to help while in storage?
Thanks.   :-*

they Should come with all the needed gaskets
Ultra Copper Silicone works great to seal gaskets
ceramic coating them is best to stop rust

:iagree:

I have Hedman ceramic coated on mine.
The passenger side is easy to replace. I was able to install mine from up top.   Drivers side is more work, steering linkage may need to be taken apart. You probably will need to instal them from below.

so does anyone know of which model will fit the easiest on a 73 with an auto on the column?
It seemed like there were a lot of codes in the whitney catalog that said the headers I was looking at would not work with a shifter on the column.

Now, I guess that is the biggest question to tackle. What fits my car?  I was looking at the flow tech but noticed the above issues.
I know with my other car - they make shorty headers that are two pieces for easier fitment.  Do they make those for 318s?
I'm no mechanic and the thought of taking apart my power steering sounds kind of scary, so I'd like to find the easiest option I can. ???

virtually every small block header has the steering link trapped through it for some unknown reason , this creates a situation where the pipes are the lowest part of the car & get falttened within days of being installed  , TTi is the Only exception I am aware of now

Good tip Chryco, thanks. I am going to be replacing the headers on my Scamp & may just go with a set of TTi's if I can bring myself to spend like that. If not, I may just go with the set of 340 manifolds to keep it simple. I'll be cutting the pipes on there now, & just don't like the extra work anymore.

I got a old set of thorley's off ebay last year, fit real well went in very easy, great clearence and didn't have to mess with the steering linkage. Just had to use a mini starter. You might look into the shorty style headers if your looking for something easy.
