just about to rip into my gauges for restoration.

Does anyone know what rivet(s) are needed and where to get them?

The subject came up not too long ago.  I could swear the info was on the board but I have not been able to find it.  When I did mine I used plain hardware store aluminum rivets and painted them black.  Not original but nobody can tell.
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

I used small zip ties on mine. Since the rivet holes are close to the edge, a small zip tie will cinch up good and tight, and that area of the gauge is 100% hidden once installed in the instrument cluster; you couldn't see it if you tried, so it doesn't matter what you use.

Also, you only need to remove one of the two rivets in each of the small gauges, and the face can then rotate out of the way to reveal the innards. If you remove both rivets, you'd want to use something other than zip ties when putting them back together (such as more rivets or small nuts/bolts).

I have one restored gauge that uses small hex screws and nuts.  It could be M3, but I think it is smaller.  The round hex screws were black and look like the rivets.  Something like: http://www.mcmaster.com/#allen-cap-screws/=s6it0h
Who in their right mind would say

"The science should not stand in the way of this."?

Science is just observation and hypothesis.  Policy stands in the way.........

Or maybe it protects us.

I suppose it depends on the specific case.....

The rivet hole is 3/32" diameter (2.38 mm), so I guess you'd need an M2 screw. Short, black, M2 button-head screws like this would be ideal, though there is really no need for anything other than a small zip tie, as long as you don't remove both factory rivets. Someone would have to have X-ray vision to ever see it once it is installed back into the cluster.

Thanks for all the information guys.

I am going for as close to factory as I can, I know there was something on this not too long ago. I was hoping to jog some memories.
