A buddy of mine has a 440 motor that i was interested in buying, He was told it is a date coded 1969 motor but I looked at it today and the front pad by the intake read

8T440  E  and on the passenger side it looks like it has like 9 - 13 - 77 which seems like it would 1977-1978 cast crank motor. I believe that is how you read it. If so he won't be too happy and i won't be interested anymore. Any help would be appreciated

Big Lebowski

***T is for truck.*** For a '77 "E" would be for a cast crank. Back in '69 "E" was for a '69 440 engine cast in late '68.
"Let me explain something to you, um i am not Mr. Lebowski, you're Mr. Lebowski. I'm the dude, so that's what you call me. That or his dudeness, or duder, or you know, el duderino if you're not into the whole brevity thing."

Isn't "T" for the Trenton engine assembly plant.

8T440  E

8= 1978
T= Built at the Trenton engine plant
440= Displacement
E= Cast crankshaft

A "T" before the displacement stands for Trenton, a "T" after the displacement stands for truck. Example: 8T440 T E
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

When they denote "T" for truck is that the heavy duty big trucks rather than 1/2, 3/4 and 1 ton pick-ups?

8T440 E with a late '77 casting date would be a 1978 440 motor with a cast crank.  Nothing wrong with a motor like that for a street car.  The cast crank is kind of a pain to deal with if you do a high performance build since you'll need the correct damper and flywheel.
