My old 94 Town Car has a lifter that seems to bleed some times after sitting. Rattle a lot when started from sitting over night, then settles down to a low ticketing sound then goes away after driving a few minutes.

Engine is a 4.6 liter and I just goggled it, says it is a SOHC motor? Is it a solid lifer / Cam follower? Car has 217,000 miles on it so I cannot complain. Very well made engine, decent power and when I real watch it, 22.3 to 25 MPG a round town.

Any additive you folks may help quite it down? I am running 10-30 which is thicker than factory.

lifter is bleeding down and not holding the oil inside...there is no "additive" that will cure this except replacement of lifter....don't waste yer money on snake oil products

I would be thinking you have worn chains and guides and the tensioners are sloppy. 217k..... drive it til it dies. 4.6 and 5.4's are select fit bearings.... no fun to mess with.

yea..yer right...I fergot about the chain guides...and I have done so many .....

so I retract my post above....not a lifter..it's the guide rails that are probably broken

Thanks for the answers Bryan and Joe. Have not heard the ticking for a few days? With what I paid for the car $700.00 and have put 20,000 miles on it what can you say?  :shruggy:

May try some snake oil, what the heck!  :D Driving it till it drops is the plan.

snake oil will not repair broken guide rails...
