Recently discovered photo of Bobby Allison and Chrysler Engineering's DC-93, dated August 26, 1969.

Bobby was the fastest, beating Buddy Baker, Charlie Glotzbach, Paul Goldsmith, Bobby Isaac and James Hylton
during the test sessions, all taking turns driving DC-93.

The Nichels Engineering built Dodge Charger Daytona  DC-93, was later numbered "88" for
he first Talladega race. Between this test and the Sept. race, the Chrysler guys found almost 2 mph of speed in the car.
I've never owned anything but a MoPar. Can you say that?

Ghoste

Cool photo, it's something that stuff like this still turns up huh.

Wonder how many more are out there waiting to be discovered  :scratchchin:

:popcrn:

There is still a LOT of material out there.   You have to either be lucky like Greg, or sometimes be willing to spend some money to get access.   The ones shot by independent photographers, you hope you can find them before they wind up in the dumpster someday.

Images from some of the major negative collections like those shot by Don Hunter or Pal Parker are available for a fee.    Dave Friedman's photos are now owned by the Henry Ford Museum.    Daytona speedway (ISC) has their own archive.   They have a very large collection, and not just of Daytona.   You will sometimes see some low res versions of these online watermarked as ISC/Racing One/Getty Images.    You let them know what you are in search of (say Bobby Isaac, 1970 Daytona 500), and the archivist will see what they have.    If you go to see them, when you arrive they will have some folders ready for you to look at.     They have things organized by driver and sometimes by race.    An 8 x 10 print is roughly $25.   Color was $40 a print a couple years ago.   So you have to be somewhat selective of what you choose.   It is easy to rack up a serious bill very quickly.   But they have the stuff.  And they have it organized.

This one above with Bobby was a wire photo distributed electronically to newspapers.  When I looked through the 1969 Talladega 500 images (lots of them) at ISC, I did not see it.     So it was a total jackpot find.

Just wanted to get this back up because there continues to be some debate on Facebook that Allison ran 200 before Baker did.

Bobby was fastest in testing in August, 1969, as seen in the vintage photo and press release.

Charlie Glotzbach upped the record to 199.466 in September, 1969, qualifying for the first Talladega race pole position.

March 24th., 1970 saw Baker break 200 mph at Talladega.

All were done in DC-93 (#88) with one 4 bbl. carb.

I found some paperwork from my interview with Chrysler test driver Jerry Wenk.  He stated that Charlie ran a 205 lap in July 1969 during early testing on the high banked 4.7 mile oval at Chelsea.  With no official Nascar timing there, it was not a recognized record.
I've never owned anything but a MoPar. Can you say that?

What are the odds, I just found that same one a couple of days ago.  It was in the newspaper the following day 8-27-69.

Now it's clear why Larry Rathgeb pulled Glotzbach from the #99, got DC-93 numbered with "88", and put Charlie in it to snag the pole over LeeRoy Yarbrough.

Thanks for posting this info, Steve.

Absolutely stunning lap times for that era!
We always congratulate Dodge for Aero superiority coupled with hemi-power but Ford were right on the money too.
It was the Bobby Allison crash in 87 that brought in restrictor plates which brought all the cars into contention.
His car was only 4 mph slower than the single seater Indy cars that year!, totally awesome for a two-ton street car, (almost) :smilielol:
Glad I saw some Dodges running in the Noughties, much prefer to see race cars err 'racing', than in Museums...

Aerolithic

I got to meet some 'old' nascar drivers at the Goodwood show UK and their wonderful cars.
Hope they will be back in 2019 for the 50th Anniversary of the Aerowars, with a real #88 this time lol...
Never send to know, for whom the bell tolls,
IT TOLLS FOR THEE...

Closest Dodge get to Nascar now is a Zombie, boohoo...

In 1970, Nascar was running 20 mph FASTER than the cars at Indy!  :2thumbs:

Found this on the net: another view of Bobby Allison driving DC-93 in August 1969 at Talladega for tests.
Headlight doors taped over, with "197 MPH tape".  Sorry for the graininess, that's how the pic looked...

Heard some recent info that stated Bobby ran 200 first.  ()

As much as I like Bobby, it never happened.

But he did run a 197 during Talladega testing and blew the engine, as seen by the oily remains on the back of DC-93 in the previously posted photo.

One more thing: He was never at the 200 run on March 24th., 1970.  Only Buddy Baker.
And that goes for Cotton Owens, too. He was at home in Spartanburg, wishing he could get the #6
Daytona running better...

I've never owned anything but a MoPar. Can you say that?

Ghoste

Im sure more than a couple of drivers are sure they ran 200 first.

Probably, but they didn't.  All the testing laps were recorded by Chrysler engineers.

Heard that this subject came up at the latest Mecum auction!

I didn't see it. Maybe someone can fill us in?

Greg,
Tim Welborn joined the 2 commentators when a nice collection of Mopars hit the block.
When the first car a B5 blue Daytona came up Tim mentioned it's ties back to Nascar.
Very brief and it was on to details of the Daytona.

Thanks for the info, John.

Somebody mentioned Bobby Allison as running 200 during testing, when in fact it never happened.
(for a fact, nobody ran near 200 at that test.  I have all the data sheets.)

I'd hope that guys talking on TV at this level would have facts available to them.
Maybe they never saw the photo with Bobby and the 197 mph record??   :shruggy:

Just keeping history correct!  :2thumbs:
