Constructing a 70 Fender ?

I've searched the site for an answer to this and have found some references but nothing solid.

Has anyone constructed a 70 Fender from say a 69 AMD fender? What exactly needs to be done? The nose of my 70 Fender is fine but the basically everything around the wheel well is trashed. I just dont have a 69 fender lying around to compare to.
Thx!

Would probably need to make a jig of some sort. Go for it!

I used brand new 69 AMD fenders to make Daytona fenders better have some fab skills the front lip behind the bumper will take some work (I didnt have to do that since im going to use a flush mount nose to fender setup)

Thanks for the pictures !  I have no fabricating skills, but I know people who do.  :yesnod:

The lower bodyline on the 69 fender is the EXACT same on the 70 where it is the mount for the valance panel!

The front sections are obviously different, but what is not so obvious are the tops. '70 fenders are wider on top.  :yesnod:

I've been thinking for a long time that AMD could stamp out a small patch-panel for people to manually convert a 1968/69 fender into a 1970 one.

bill440rt

Not just a exterior patch panel. They would also have to create the front inner brackets & headlight support. The headlight supports are integral with the fenders on '70's. There was no separate header panel like '68-'69's.

Bill, How can a 70 Fender be wider on the top? I know the front fender edge is not as wide on a 68-69 (but not by much) and the design is different right on the leading edge all together but when I was mocking my nose up to the fenders it was the same width exactly on that top leading edge. also the fender scoops sit on the fenders perfect. In everything I have seen I think the designers just changed the valance mount and the front lip (bumper mounting area) and the headlight buckets but I don't think they changed any physical dimensions on the fender.

Exactly how they can be wider I do not know.
But I remember working on them side by side & noticing that the '70 fenders were wider along the top. Again, not by much.
I'll try to get a comparison measurement to verify next time I'm at my '70.

They sure are wider.  They even changed the size of the hood indents that year.
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

Indygenerallee

Well, I know the hoods are totally different, whole different subject as that's not what we are talking about... width of the top of the fender 69 vs. 70

How much shorter (lengthwise) are the 70's compared to the 68/9 fenders? :popcrn:

Indygenerallee

Well I had a friend measure the top of his fender on his 70 directly over the wheel opening and they are the exact same width as my 69 AMD Fenders.. roughly 9 1/4 inches.. Like I said before the very front edge of the fender is wider (first 5 inches) because it had the different profile to fit the bumper (more flat instead of rounding up and over on the 68-69) Also the lengths are the same because the front section of the fender was cut much shorter than a 68-69 (to match the valance and bumper) it makes it look longer than it really is.

So in this picture you are filling in the indention for the 69 bumper, and what is the lower marker light looking thing in the gray area?

I mean it seems a 69 bumper could be shortened, fill in that bumper indent, move the headlight bracing back, maybe (?)

Why cant AMD just make a 70 fender? WHY!?  Where's the crying emoticon?
Oh there it is.
:cryin:

Indygenerallee

yes made a filler panel for the stock 69 bumper indention, the gray piece is a fiberglass Daytona valance panel.

Keep us posed...Very interested in this since we will NEVER see new '70 fenders

So you cut the frt. Edge where it rolls over off the 69?

Cooter, Yes I have to make the panel for the squared off front edge yet, but since im not going to run a nose gasket I don't have to worry about the inner flange that a 70 fender has.

AKcharger

Hmmm wonder if the inner flange from a '71-74 would work?

was thinking the same thing. Hell, if someone can make up a "how to" for AMD 68-69 fenders, this might ease some of the strain on 70 stuff.

yeah 71-74 fender flange might work, but would probably easier to just fab one up.
