Can the package trays be refinished?

I know a repro is cheap and easily available but has anyone refinished their original?  Mine is in great condition other than the black being faded away in places the way that they do.
Can I just take it out and paint it?

Yes you can.  I'd probably go the SEM vinyl route as you would do to seats and door panels.
