hood spring

I used a plastic cap from an old Kodak 35mm film canister. They are gray, about 1" in diameter. Seemed to do the trick also, fit on the spring perfect. 

The adhesive plastic film also works, look under the hoods/trunks of some newer cars and you'll see them.

If you can install it w/o bubbles it is practically invisible. works great on my Challenger with a lift off hood. I placed some plastic on the cowl so if I need to look under the hood quick I do not need to get help lifting it off.
