Tracking down a charger by VIN

Any idea how to track down a Charger using the VIN? I am trying to locate a charger I used to own. ( I know, just shoot me now.) Most data bases need 17 digits. I tried the NMVTIS (National Motor Vehicle Title Information System), but the State of Michigan is one of the handful of states that does not provide data. Any Ideas? I am 99% sure that is where the car resides.

If there is a Registry that covers your year, contact them. They will not give out the current location or owner without that person's permission, but if they know who has the car they can ask for you.

Most owners are quite happy to talk to former owners of the car about its past.

What can you tell us about the car.  I come across one from time to time.  Post the VIN as well.

Can the Police Dept?

If the car has plates and on the road, the VIN should be in the database. - I would think

It was sold in 10/2012 out of Dallas, TX to Michigan I am pretty sure. B5 , Black interior. 383/2 A/C. 1968 Charger. Is it considered bad form to post a VIN to a car that you no longer own? I can I guess, I just don't know if that is cool or not so I didn't want to piss anyone off...

Well you make a good point, let's hold off on the VIN.  A 383/2 may actually be a little easier to find.  I'll keep my eyes open.

Hmm, interesting question.  I think its a dice toss, some are really offended by it and others not at all.  Me personally I don't get too bent out of shape about it.  It seems a fairly common practice with the aero guys.

I wouldn't worry about it. I I have the title and the car, shouldn't matter who knows it. anyone can walk up to the car and read it.  might help you find it.  whats the full story on it anyhow?

The VIN is the cars legal name.

If you had lost contact with a family member years ago would you ask around for them by name? I think so.

Also, if the VIN is posted in a forum & the owner Googles the VIN he will find you.

The reason I would like to track it down is that I would be interested in buying it back if the owner decided to sell or just bought it to flip. It was a solid survivor car, just needed a lot of work to get it right, but it had very minimal rust issues. I was in a bad spot financially at the time and I had to sell it. Getting harder and harder to find anything that is not a rust bucket, trashed out grill and/or has had the dash cut to pieces at anything close to a reasonable price... With this one, all the pieces were there but it just needed a lot of work.
