What is this thing in the trunk

Sorry no picture...and I've searched the boards. On my 70 there is a steel tube (about same diameter of filler tube) on the right side of the trunk, that contours around the wheel well. Goes to a plugged hole on the trunk floor, and I cant really see where the upside is going.

What the heck is it?   :shruggy:

UFO

It's a '70 thing.
There is a thread on here. I'm having a brain fade as to what it's called. ( want to say ECS maybe EGS)
Someone here will send you the right direction.

Here is a 70 trunk without it. It is attached to the large floor plug in this pic and then extends up around the wheel well and into, um, the roof?

oh actually it is attached closer to the wall than that plug.

Thats it! Cant see what it could possibly do though.  :shruggy:

A383Wing

you need the rest of the required emission stuff that goes with that tube in order for it to work correctly

tsmithae

If I understand correctly, it was a vent specifically designed to comply with California emissions standards. It would separate the vapors from the liquid and reduce the amount of gases released into the atmosphere.

I got one in my 70 and it's from Cali.

ACUDANUT

It does not go the roof. It stops under the trunk lid, or rather under the quarter panel.

Mytur Binsdirti

Talk about having junk in the trunk.

A383Wing

gas tank is different than standard also....more nipples for hoses to connect to

ACUDANUT

I always told people it was a Nascar thing. LOL. You could make another hole for a second gas flip lid and and be done filling it in half the time.

Is that your car toocheaptosmoke?

So I'm guessing the underside originally went to the tank...and the other side did something else of major importance.

Good feeling to know that my car helped save LA from being really smoggy or something.

Baldwinvette77

Its send gas fumes from the tank into the passenger compartment?  :shruggy:

Exactly the reason I was thinking "what the?"

I don't get it.
I'm kind of thinking that it is totally non functional, and just some BS. The lower side of it on my car goes to absolutely nowhere. A dead end.  There is factory undercoating over where it should be popping out and going to the tank.

Not that it matters, but it is odd

Ya, when I got the original tank and lines were still hooked up.  There was like 4 vent lines going into the tank, one for each corner I'm guessing.  Like A383 said, the they had a special tank.  The top of the tube looks like it's soldered on, shouldn't be any fumes in the trunk. I guess the thinking was possibly to prevent liquid gas from venting out of the tank if parked at an angle.  :shruggy: Old tank was bad anyways, now I just put that thing back in because I had already cut a hole in the new trunk extension before I realized I didn't need it.

thanks for the pic   ,so its basicly just a vent (expansiontube)  :scratchchin:

My understanding was that it acted as a drier to allow the vapors to cool, condense, and not get into the atmosphere - much like the air driersyou can plumb into your air compressor to remove water vapors.

ACUDANUT

I am seeing two type of tubes here also. Maybe 2 different years built in Cali ? Could be that some late 69's or early 70's had a different trunk tubes.

Ghoste

Wouldn't be surprised if the standard to meet changed and necessitated a different type.  :shruggy:

Here's a pic of mine on unrestored original. LEON.
