Guys,

I have searched threads about this topic and all seem to be bb.  But my sb charger is having difficulty starting without excessive cranks and holding.the throttle down.  I have added a carb spacer to my performer intake and 1406 carb.  I have routed all lines away from anything hot.  My old glass c through filter would crush the filter element which causes me to think it's vaper lock.  I have changed this to a metal.fram filter and insulating what I can on the lines and filter.  Any ideas

Sorry guys additional when cold he fires right up.  Or if warm and I stop for a few seconds no issue.  If it sits it's the crank game

Cooter

Either electric fuel pump, or deal with Ethanol evaporating out of carb bowls if sits too long.
F.I. vehicles don't have this problem. Why?  Because as soon as you hit the key to crank, fuel pump (electric) is running.

I agree with Cooter but I believe something else is the culprit other than evaporation.  My 318 with mechanical fuel pump can sit for months and it fires up within seconds every time.  I'm leaning more towards what you said, vapor lock.  Is your tank vented?

Sounds more like flooding to me.

Sounds like flooding to me too. You say it starts good cold, starts good when restarted quickly when warm, only has to crank excessively when warm and has been sitting for a while. Sounds like fuel is leaking in to the intake, or the choke is closing prematurely.

Investigate those two things. Go for a drive to fully warm the car up. When back home quickly remove the air cleaner and observe the carb. Make sure the choke stays open. look down the throat of the carb and see if fuel is puddling around and/or under the throttle plates. You could smell excess fuel.

Might be improper float level, leaking needle/seat, leaking carb gasket, etc.

At least this will narrow it down to the carb, or not the carb.
