68 GTX - how to verify and WIW

I have a line on a 'survivor' GTX with 440 and unknown other options, other than it's supposedely 'all orginial' and 'numbers matching' for what I'm thinking is a decent price if these statements are all true.

I think I've determined that the RS code means a true GTX, but were these cars 'numbers matched' on the engine/trans and trunk/radiator support like the later b-bodies?   Anything to look out for in particular with these cars?   Any way to tell if it's a rebody or a clone (i.e. any obvious items that would give it away as a Satellite or Belvedere outside the VIN?)

Lastly, if the car is a geniune unmolested 'survivor' in decent shape, what's it worth, ballpark? The paint is supposedly faded, and has a few primer spots but otherwise the car is said to be good and the engine runs like a top from a person I trust who has heard it.

Thanks in advance for your help, I don't know as much about the Plymouths and don't want to make a mistake here.

The matching numbers part would be done just as any other 1968 Chrysler product so do it as you would a Charger.

No pics yet, I haven't seen the car and I want to show up prepared. It's been sitting and driven very little for 15+ years.

In survivor form, are these cars worth north or south of what an R/T Charger brings?  Just trying to get a ballpark.  And no, I don't plan on flipping it - I also don't want to get ripped off, either :)

My guess would be a little less than a comparable Charger RT.

If I recall correctly, the GTX's are a bit rarer than an R/T.  Very desirable car.......

Yeah but I think the Charger has a wider following.  A lot of people even within the car hobby have little to no awareness about the GTX.

hatersaurusrex

Chargers are definitely more recognizable and have a wider following -  but I've known about and coveted a GTX (mostly the 71) since I was a wee lad - almost as much as the Charger.

I bet the GTX guys get 'nice Roadrunner' almost as much as they get 'nice Chevelle'

If it was a vert it would bring much stronger money, but if it's truly as original as he says and runs strong, I can't pass.  Of course, after buying two truckloads worth of parts for the '68, I'm much more seasoned in the way of the B-body so I won't go in blind this time.   Maybe I can keep the car, massage it, and drive it until my Charger is done then recoup some of the damage done to my bank account by the '68 :)   Or maybe I'll start a long feud with my wife about why our garages are packed with old cars I never drive :)

None of you have that problem, do you?  :) :) :)

As always, it depends....   Here is a very nice GTX that is under value of a Charger RT - http://www.ebay.com/itm/Plymouth-GTX-GTX-high-440-4-spd-Dana-60-RR1-Maroon-Metallic-63-600-miles-VIDEO-NEW-PHOTOS-/331200116180?forcerrptr=true&hash=item4d1d10b5d4&item=331200116180&pt=US_Cars_Trucks

I remember a member here picked up a F8 GTX a few years ago for a song - great condition.

If your interested and his price seems high.  Bring some examples of some current cars for sale and give a fair market price.   :2thumbs:

My name is Mike and I'm a Moparholic!

His price is well under half what that car is going for - but sight unseen I'm trying not to get too excited.  I'm going to pick up a car trailer this weekend I traded for and hopefully go out and inspect the car with a trailer and cash in hand - always the best way to deal :)

Thanks for all your input guys.

Go with cash in hand now and worry about the trailer after you get a title in hand. Lots of people can bring cash between now and the weekend.  :Twocents:

God must love stupid people; He made so many.

Indygenerallee

I agree, go with cash and NO TRAILER!!! When someone selling a car spies the trailer they know they have it sold and if there could be any wiggle room in the price that's gone because of the trailer..
Sold my Charger unfortunately....never got it finished.

Haven't seen it yet.  Car is not even technically up for sale, he just said 'If I could get X for it I'd sell it' so I'm trying to track him down without appearing overly eager.   He lives 1/2 hour from my brother who knows him so I need to do a litlte ride-along and schedules haven't permitted just yet.
