What headers is everyone running on 2nd gens?I'm looking for a set of coated headers that will fit nice on a 69 440 4speed and not be over priced.
Also do you need to remove the exhaust studs in the heads to make them fit?

Hookers fit, but NO CHEAPER HEADER  will fit correctly without some massaging....Other than TTI.

I heard TTi's are nice.

http://www.ttiexhaust.com/

They are above my budget.

Dark Side, If I learned just one thing in the years I messed with BB Mopar, cheaper headers SUCK! :icon_smile_angry:

I love my Hookers and the TTI all so fit great! I would give a slight edge to the TTI as far as fit. But I still love hookers!

TTI's, getting to the 3rd plug is much easier!

Dougs fit nicely, although mini starter has to go in at the same time as headers, only downside,

do the exhaust  studs need to be removed on 906's to be able to take headers on and off in the car?

Most who install headers use bolts....makes life a whole lot easier.  :yesnod:

A good fitting budget header that i've used in the past is the Headman # 78030  I had these on my 68 with a set of stock heads, power steering, power brakes. These are designed for straight plugs so if you plan on upgrading to an aluminum head that has an angled sparkplug, be aware that these won't work without some surgery.  :smash: :hack:

Schumakers headers fit well also...from what I heard

I have the 5903 Hooker headers on my 69 Charger 440 and they fit very well and tuck up under the car nice but like alot of headers they might need some hammer dings to fit without rubbing anything.  I like to keep the exhaust studs in the heads if at all possible, they can be a pain to take out plus they go straight into water so the bolts can be an issue to seal up sometimes if you don't use some good sealant. The headers are definately easier to install without the studs in the heads if your looking for ease of installation. Also with these 5903 headers you can leave the headers on the car and remove and install a mini starter without loosening the motor mount and jacking up the engine, you just have to slide the steering column back to have access to the starter.

I have the entire TTI setup with X pipe crossover that I just installed about a month ago... I'll start with the negatives:
Cost

That being said, they fit great, have a great ceramic coating, and I had no issues with installation. I am even able to remove my starter without having to fully remove the header. I can't compare them to others, as I didn't try the hooker or other brands, but I can speak to the fact that I don't see anything wrong with my TTI system or its design/installation other than it begin a few benjamin more than most other brands.

I just installed a set of hedmans as well.  On stock heads. The stock starter would not fit , and I had to make a small dimple to clear the power steering.  It was close fit to the torsion bar as well but it did clear it. I added a little clearance just for comfort sake.  The passanger side fit without problem , and ground clearance is excellent.

The  coated hooker comp 5903 sounds good at $484 a set, does anyone have any engine pics of them ?

I'm going to definitely order a full system from TTI. I'm glad to hear so many people are pushing them!

Jeff, only problem I had with TTI was installing a mini starter. Now the headers them self was part of the problem, not clearness but getting the wenches in to fix things I missed.

If converting to a mini, test install it first. One we used we had to remove the stud out of the 727 that the stock one used. Had to pull the TTI's to do that.

I still love my Hookers, and Red 70 R/T 493 we all pay one way or another!  :scratchchin:

My hookers have lasted, gosh, 35 years now? :icon_smile_big:

Cuda Ken,

Thanks for all of the info!
A few questions for you... so if I get the TTI headers for my 440 big block, do I have to install a mini starter for clearance (vs. the OEM), or will they clear the OEM starter?
And... can they be installed with the motor and trans in place? Or does the trans have to be bulled? Or both?

I've NEVER run anything but cast iron manifolds... so I sure am excited about some ceramic coated headers and a 3" dual exhaust system with an "X-Pipe"!  :yesnod: :drool5:

Jeff, a stock starter will work fine. Far as installing with the motor, have no clue. We all ready had the engine out so I could paint the engine compartment.

will the hookers clear the  z bar bellcrank on a 4 speed?

After reading all the negative posts in the search engine on both hooker and hedman I think i'll get the doug's 452's . They are little over budget around $685 but look nice and had good reviews.

Wow, $685 for Doug's, isn't TTi's around $800.00?

The coated tti's I've found are $850-900 range.

If Ron says there good, I would give them a try if using straight plugs.  :2thumbs:

Hard to believe good headers cost over $600.00 these days!  :brickwall:

I am using these headers in my '68 w/ 383 auto and power steering, pretty good for the money and they were even cheaper 5 years ago, I am using them with the stock studs in the heads, on the driver side I had to beat a couple tubes up around the starter and one dent for drivers torsion bar, passenger side is a great fit though.
