Wonder if vinyl would do the same?  Of course, it won't be textured, but....

Vinyl would be extremely difficult to get coverage in the cowl area grills :Twocents:

Thanks for the kind words all!

Mark, do those come in orange?  ;)

Maybe, but if not, I'm sure that you can find a color that will go nicely with your car.

Ill let Bill field that one....

Heres a shot after it dried over night.  Yo can see the texture "laid down" quite a bit but its still there.   Never really got close to true Organasol personally to see the amount of texture/sheen.

can anyone judge how close it is from the pic??

I'll have a bit of time off this July to do this to mine.   :yesnod:

It did lay down better as it cured I see, Chris.  :yesnod:
Given the painting conditions in a home garage it turned out as best as possible.

These modern paints are not like paints of yesteryear. No suppliers here in NJ even carry lacquer anymore, & only a few resto shops have original cans of Organisol left.
Lacquer is the least durable auto paint, so the only way to get it anywhere close to any rough texture like tail panels, dashes, stripes etc is with spraying technique.
First step is to apply 1-2 coats of color as normal, just for coverage. In this case only 1 coat of Hot Rod black was needed. This was allowed to fully flash. Next is all in technique. Air pressure is turned up slightly, and the fluid needle is turned in a little on the gun. The gun is held further away from the surface, in this case about 24" - 30".
At this point you are just evenly dusting the paint on. The mist of paint somewhat dries before it hits the surface, hence the name "dry spray". It needs to go on evenly also so it is not blotchy.
It was given about 2-3 "dry" coats. As the mist hits the surface it gives it a texture, very similar to Organisol or other paints of the like.

Thanks Bill,  thought it probably meant shooting it from further away to let it dry as it settled to the surface, I did that a little to try to get the blending right to avoid getting stripes showing in the paint, I used the totally auto organisol in a can for mine, but also have a quart of hot rod black sitting on the shelf in case i ran out.

My experience with lacquer is minimal, the stealth turbo i have has a black roof and pop up headlights and i tried using lacquer for that but it made clouds of mist above the surface as I sprayed and was hard to judge the coverage.  When i got done it looked fine but color sanding cut through the paint which told me I didn't lay enough coats, I'll try it again in the future, never afraid to try something, but have learned to avoid cheap ebay paints, i'll stick with custom mixes from the local finishmasters I've used for years.

Bill,

Have you ever checked out some spray can black rock chip paint  aka SEM  ?   As far as the texture as compared to Organisoll?

Chris, that really does look great!   :2thumbs:

I did not realize how well the '69 V21 pattern would flow with the vinyl roof, but it ties everything together quite well.  That shot from the front of the car shows it off the best.

Was Bill just mugging for the camera in his glamor shot, or is that some secret SINY sign we should know about?

  :smilielol:

I think we were just both relieved it was over and Chris made the right decision.
We were done around early afternoon, and Chris generously lended me a hand with another little project I had going on for my '69. Which, I think turned out to be more than a challenge than his V21!

The more I look at his car the more I really like the V21 on it. You're right Gene, it does really compliment the look of the car.
Chris, have you tried installing the Cragars yet to compare the look?  :scratchchin:

I agree.  The vinyl top accentuates the V21.  The vinyl top was not a mandatory option with the V21.  You could get it without the top as seen on this unrestored car
