exhaust smell

Hi , I have noticed an odor from my exhaust and never really thought about until we brought my car home from storage. My wife was following me home and said she was really getting 'gassed out'. It doesn't smell like gasoline but really like something may be set wrong ,too lean maybe?? But it runs good ,no popping or sputtering. Like way more exhaust smell than should be. Is this something I can 'fix' ?? Thanks

You sure it isn't running rich?  That would be my guess and yes, it can be fixed.  What type of carb?

Don't be so quick to criticize the car; a lot of people who aren't used to older cars like these find the smells, sounds and whatever ruckus that comes with muscle cars very uncomfortable and unsettling...

Pull a plug and check but I bet it's on the rich side.

I pulled the driver side front and back ,both are a medium tan/brown.

My understanding is too lean has no smell and generates carbon monoxide.  Too rich really burns your eyes.  All the CO detectors in the basement used to go off about 10-15 minutes after I would pull my car into the garage.  Now after about an hour, and for about the next few, after pulling the car in, the house has a pleasant mechanical smell.  The CO detectors going off was a cause of concern for my wife and the pleasant mechanical smell is too (even though I have lessened it by opening the garage windows and air out the car before pulling it into the garage).   :icon_smile_big:
Who in their right mind would say

Science is just observation and hypothesis.  Policy stands in the way.........

Or maybe it protects us. 

I suppose it depends on the specific case.....

It's just older cars is all. Whenever my non-car friends get rides in the Charger, or my friend's 72 Nova or my other friend's 65 Lincoln, the non-car people always complain about the smells, noises, etc. Non-car people don't get it...

Ok. The center carb is like a 60 something (in my notes at home) but I am pretty sure the outers are quite a bit bigger. Should I start with the outers? I have almost no info on the motor (guy I got it from had none). I was going to take it apart to rebuild but everything looked like new as I was disassembling ,no gunk or anything. All I know for sure is it is at max bore .060 ,and then some maybe.

I'm a car guy, but I'm also a health science guy and the latter wins here.  No fuel or exhaust smell for me, I will do whatever it takes to get rid of it.  This is cancer ladies and gentlemen, make no mistake.  If you're setting of smoke alarms, maybe you should be a bit more worried about the well being of yourself and your family instead of this macho bullshit.

I noticed a nasty smell running my car (Six pack also.) after adding octane boost. Unknown to me at the time I had a gummed up center bowl and weak spark from sitting too much. How's the car running? The smell cleared up after burning that tank load up. (I fixed the issues it had while still burning up that fuel.)
I'd check all the grounds for the body and engine, go over the ignition connections and check that the center carb has a good squirt from the accelerator pump as that was the give away that the bowl was getting gummy. If all is well run that load of fuel down and get fresh fuel.  :2thumbs:
