How much should one pay someone to check out a car?

and I am not talking about a professional appraiser.  For example, someone from this site?  I am interested in the '69 R/T SE that a member is selling, but for the coin that he is asking, I'd like to get a knowledgeable mopar guy to check it out (preferrably an old-timer and not some new member who just joined.)   

Anyhow, what would the going rate be?  Any ideas?

I offered a member here $100 plus gas to check out a car for me. He wouldn't have any of that and just wanted gas money.

If a car was local I'd check it out for free. If it was an hour or more than I'd simply want gas money.

I agree, within an hour or so drive I wouldn't ask for anything. But if I was offered gas money I would accept it.  This is more of a "good guy" gesture to help fellow members. I would never think about charging anybody for my time.

That has been my experience as well.  I offered more and in the end they were more than happy to simply have their costs covered with nothing for time.

I try my best to support others in the same fashion and to return the favor when I get the opportunity. I think that's what makes the community survive and possibly flourish!

done that a couple of times. really depends on the situation. If it involves driving far (and I need to take a buddy with me for a second set of eyes), ill maybe settle for gas $ + lunch or whatever. It's a little trickier when it comes to time - if I have to go out of my way to make time for it (ie. if I could/should be doing other things instead), then maybe ill accept a couple of bucks (but I'm not talking Galen money by any means).

Usually its worked out pretty well, and I'm happy to help out a MOPAR bro.

I bought my Coronet sight unseen after talking with the seller over the phone for about an hour.  It was a legitimate car dealer/consignment place in Washington state so I felt pretty comfortable buying it from pictures.  

He literally walked around the car with me on the phone while I asked a million questions.  I felt like I was going to get exactly what he described...or I was in for the surprise of my life...! Luckily it worked out well.

Thanks for the suggestions, fellas.  The car I'm talking about is the one in the For Sale section.  It's the '69 R/T SE that RAC95054 is selling.  So now my question is, do I ask here or in the Charger Discussion section?  Anyone near Santa Clara, CA?  I believe that is where he is located.

Please PM me if anyone thinks they may be able to check it out.

I've looked at numerous cars for people over the years. It might seem odd, but for the regulars, its gas money and maybe lunch depending on how far away it is and how thorough they want me to go into the car. If i'm checking a car for 3-4 hours under, over, and inside of it, its alittle different. Now I've had some people ask me from other sites to go look at a car for them, i had never even heard of the guy, and he had joined 2 weeks earlier. and he got somewhat irritated with me when I told him I needed gas money plus 100 to do it. It was 350 miles from me. to each their own I guess.

I would offer somebody something for their efforts if it were me but that said, I just spent two days to go look over a car six hours away from for a guy who was a great deal further than six hours and I was happy to do it for my expenses and that was all.  This networking thing we have here on forums like this is a great way to find help globally and even though there are always some snakes to avoid, for the most part car people are fantastic about helping each other out.
