I am putting a 67 383 engine in my 68 charger. I am sure the heads are probably the 516 heads. will I need to run a lead additive. If so what should I use?

I have also heard that a gallon of diesel to a tank full is all I need to do Any thoughts on this? I am also going to be adding or at least trying adding Acetone for octane booster. this engine is not to important to me so I want to try some diffrent experiments with it as far as additives so shoot me some ideas and I can try them and keep everyone posted as to my gas mileage and other results.

I have never run anything in my cars....the 66 Charger we have is a 160,000 mile original car, still running strong...my 66 Dart and 68 Barracuda were running when we sold them, no additives either.....

yer gonna get various opinions....mine was above

Thanks A383wing. That is just what I am looking for. I do plan on being very hard on this engine lot of drag strip time.

got sevral thousand miles now on my 440 with 906 heads still runs great no hardened valve seats on unleaded, checked recently with an electronic endoscope no issues :2thumbs:
I don't care what is is designed to do,I want to know what it can do.

How hard do you drive it?

Tory, I as well never had harden seats added to mine and run stock gas. Have 96,000 miles on the 70 Cuda 383 and no valve problems. 68 Road Runner 43,000 and no issues. Same with the 69 Charger Heads, but not many miles.

Far as how hard I run my cars? While I don't beat them to death, I run them to there maximum edge of going Boom!  :drive: You got to know your limits son.  :D

When racing, heck spin a extra $15.00 but don't think you need it.

Yea I hope to keep the motor in one piece for a couple years. Whats the max RPM's you would let a 70,000 mile engine run?

Stock Rod bolts are the first weak point, 5500 RPM's. Yea you can spin a 383 to 6000 RPM's but you are pressing your luck IMHO.  To be safe, stock shift point is 5200 RPM.

Push it, you might win the races but beak it you lose $ wise.

Thanks good to know I'll probably just set the red line at 5000. I think I am going to look into one of the MSD's that u can set a kill RPM on.

I would be replacing the OE timing chain & gears with a new one that isn't plastic & aluminum before spinning it much over 4,000

X2. Then 5500 to 5700 all day long.

yeah I will probably replace that as well. Maybe I will see what things look Like inside the engine if I change the cam. That way I will have some idea what kind of shape it is in. the coronet had dual exhaust on it. Did a 4 door coronet come that way?
