Is it best to take the bellhousing with tranny as a whole or can I just unbolt the 4 bolts for the tranny from the bell housing?

Thx Joe that's what I kinda figured, some that owned a chally had a 4 speed also at the vegas strip and he said to remove the bell housing with the tranny or I will have issues or something like that.

c00nhunterjoe

Dont know what issues he is talking about. Much easier to leave the bellhousing on

Hmmmm, don't know what happened to the post, but referring to pulling just the tranny. Unless you've done this a couple times, lining up the throwout bearing can be a little difficult as is the pilot. As stated, it is easier with bellhousing if able.

To each his own i guess. I find it the opposite. But thats what makes the hobby what it is. We all have our opinions and preferences and none of them are right or wrong. Whatever works for your situation.

that's what he told me also was the alignment if you take just the tranny out.  IM gonna try the tranny and inspect it and go from there and if I cant align it right ill take that bell housing out.  Working in a little garage is a major pain.....car still idles though after the accident  :icon_smile_big:

If you pull the trans straight out you'll have no problem. Taking the bell off is needless work. If for some reason you can't get it back in, THEN do more work and take off the bell. I have never had to take the bell off when swapping a trans, and actually I always install the bell first and then stab the trans when assembling a running gear.

Now you see what I mean? Easy to attempt to talk you through it if you've never actually done it it can be a little frustrating.
WTF happened? How the hell did you break the tail housing?

1/4 miles run strained it.   Then I limped it home and then it couldnt take it no more and cracked.

Cooter are the u joints have caps on em or do I iust straight press em out? It lookes like the front u joint u straight press em out.   I figure it has a cap on ends, c clip inside, then press em .

Thx cooter need to get the beast running again but alas rquires money she is also my daily driver.

Holy sheet! How much torque are you putting through it?

Cooter

I've driven 750 HP cars and never broken a tailshaft housing. Something else happened.  Vibrations like a bad u joint mighta finished it off. ;)

The whole driveline is old it was never upgraded or cleaned or renweed etc.  We rebuilt the motor and tranny but left driveline alone thinking it be ok..... :'(

More damage the crossmember is gone and there are c clips within the u joint not in the caps.  Learning along the way lol

This is why you always check the rest out before pounding in it.

Geez Mike, I know you car runs strong, but broken tail shaft. I have seen U joints break, axles snap, engine mounts rip apart, but never a tail shaft break.
