What does "T" stand for? (Engine)

On a vin the fifth digit is a letter for the type of engine. Wondering what "T" stands for on a 1970 Dodge Charger R/T :shruggy:

Looked it up on a few Vin decodes and they keep saying "unknown"?

A book states there were two 440-4 engines available for 1970 R/T cars. A plain mode and a HP model?

"T" is the fifth digit of the VIN for an Imperial with a 440. :Twocents:

"T" is the VIN code used for the 350 horse 440-4. It was available in C bodies only.
The book is wrong. There was only one 440-4bbl available for a 70 Charger; the "U" code HP 375 horse.

This is a registration certificate:

I was told by the owner that it exactly matched the VIN tag. Car is long gone so I can't prove or disprove that.  :shruggy:

I see a T listed in my copy of the FSM (charger coronet) as 440 std. vs HP.  Can't say whether or not that option was available.
Who in their right mind would say

"The science should not stand in the way of this."?

Science is just observation and hypothesis.  Policy stands in the way.........

Or maybe it protects us.

I suppose it depends on the specific case.....

Then the point is kinda moot.

Since there is no precedent for a T code in a Charger and
It's not a factory document and
There's no way to verify what the car came with then
One must consider this an interesting typo and not proof this combination actually existed.

Why would the STL plant even have this assembly on hand? They didn't build C bodies.
What would be the broadcast sheet engine code for a 350 horse 440 in a B body?
What would the window sticker say?
How would an owner react when they thought they were buying a U code HP engine and received a T code?

Lots of things to consider..... :Twocents:

I don't believe the car HAD a "T" 440, just that the vin was mistamped if it did match the registration cert.

Again, it's an interesting topic but since the car doesn't exist, there's no way to know.

I do have pictures of the car, just none of the VIN and one member here used to know where the car was located rotting away  :icon_smile_big:

Interesting topic.  I have a friend that owns a '69 R/T 4speed, 440 car that has a XP rather that the XS as it should.  But it does have the 'L' designation for a 440.  Also, years ago I worked with a guy that said he bought a non R/T '68 that had the 350 hp 440 in it.  I always called bs on his claim, but this thread has me thinking about it again...

I knew a lot of guys that swore they owned Hemi-wedges.  ;)

The engine in this R/T was a "440 Magnum" so I'm pretty sure it was a type  :2thumbs:
