Any Jeep fan's on here?? I have mostly grand cherokee's that are considered daily driver's for most of my family. I have one regular cherokee that is my son's and my daughter has a 98 grand cherokee. I still call them mine since I usually do all the repair work when something goes wrong with them. My son's is a 93 sport that I rebuilt the engine in a few years back which turned out really good. I recently picked up a 2000 grand cherokee with a rattling engine which turned out to be a 4.0 with a broken off piston skirt. It was in great condition except for the engine which had 195,000 miles on it. Got it all apart and rebuilt the engine on it and so far got about 2500 bucks in it so far including what I gave for it. Got a friend putting a heater core and evap core in for me so will probably have around $3000 when he gets done with it so I still figure that isn't too bad. Also got an 04 grand that is the wife's and I have a 93 and a 98 grand that are actually my drivers. All the jeeps we got have the 4.0 engine in them except the 93, it has a 318 in it which has about 153,000 miles on it and runs good. I'm a big fan of the 4.0 liter engine which has good power for what it is and get's fair fuel mileage too!!!! ;D

The new 2014 V8 Grand Cherokees are sharp looking, capable and super plush rides for sure.

The death wobble does suck, it is insane when it happens at 50 mph.. To the OP. i don't care for the looks of the grand cherokee as much as the plain old boxy cherokee, but you are right the 4.0 is the best engine jeep ever built.

I only have two of the WJ's (99-04) and I have three of the ZJ's (93-98). I like the square cherokee's too but they are getting harder and harder to find in good condition. The ZJ's are my favorite of the grand cherokees and usually death wobble is caused by worn front end parts. I had this problem with my 98 and I first replaced the track-bar and the steering stabilizer and it helped but it still wanted to wobble after you hit a bump in the road so I then purchased a used steering box and power steering pump and swapped all that out and it was better but still not fixed. Figured out the tie rod ends were worn out. Replaced all the tie rod ends with new one's and had the front end lined up and it has been great since. That was over a year ago now and it is doing great. Jeep tie rod ends will not look worn even if you have someone move the steering wheel and you watch from underneath for slack. Take a large pair of channel locks and squeeze the tie rod ends and see if there is any up and down movement in them. If it is good it won't move but a little bit and if it is worn out it will move up and down a good bit maybe like 1/4 inch or more.

I love the XJ's had a few of them.

That 4.0 motor is awesome. Kind of eye -balling the new Cherokee for the wife, but probably let it be in production a couple years first.

The 4.0 is easily one of the best engines produced by any manufacturer - they're nearly indestructible.   Put the right oil in them (remember, the 4.0 is a design carried over from the 232 and 258 and has flat tappets) and they'll run forever.  I'm willing to bet every one that ever failed was due to poor maintenance.

I6's in general are awesome motors, but if AMC did one thing right, it was build engines.  They're low-rpm torque monsters across the board.  My 258 has a 140K on it and runs like a Swiss watch.

84 CJ7 here by the way and looking for an old Jeepster Commando to restore as my next project.

I got a 98  5.9 Limited  that is my backup work vehicle and the junk carryall for E-boogers junk going to and from the Nats in August.

DD is an red 00 Cherokee that the 4.0's been in 3 vehicles so far.   It was in my white '00 that got stolen from my driveway, recovered before I finally wrecked in on some black ice a couple years back.   So I bought the red one with a blown motor and swapped it.

We looked at a Cherokee Classic someone had traded in at a Honda dealer. The dealer refused to sell it to an in-state customer because it had too many miles on it and their chain's corporate policy dictated it be sent to an out-of-state auction. We even offered to sign any kind of waiver absolving them of any warranty responsibility. The thing only had 85K on it. The GM took me aside and told me that we both knew that with proper care that old Jeep would outlast anything he was selling new, but he just could not sell it to me. I've had four 4.0 sixes and they are almost indestructible. It's one of  the few engines where mileage almost doesn't matter when looking at a used vehicle. We traded off our '99 Grand last fall only because the rust monster was starting to make itself known, especially the fuel and brake lines.
