Sorry I don't understand Blackanese. And I don't like the words from era of Flower Power ( I was a little too young then).I guess I am one of the few who still speak English.  :rotz:

You know we have some members on this board who are African-American and I can guarantee you that they do not talk like that.  I do not like those type of generalizations.  I would of did this in a PM, but I think we ALL need to unlearn what we think we can get away with.  And no, I am not overreacting.

I like the "Old School" saying myself. What saying I HATE is "sick" as when someone uses the word as something is cool :rotz:   Sick has and as far as I'm concerned, will always mean "a cold", or "gross".
I couldn't agree more.  My theory is that someone tried to say "man, that's sLick!" but they were too dumb to add the L.  (The Discovery Channel changed American Chopper ads from "the slickest bikes around" to "the sickest bikes around.")  Now, some people have adapted it a bit and say "Man, that's ILL!"  I'm just waiting for the next adjustment, "Man, that is diseased!" "Man, that has an ailment!"  "Man, that's unhealthy!"  "Man, put some ointment on that!"

Please people try and think of some other way of saying how it was back when you were young.

I'll stop saying it, as soon as you're someone I consider important in the world (or even this board).  :icon_smile_wink:

Khyron

sorry, I like the phrase and will most likely continue to use it when describing "slot rims" or other old styling

You must hate Orange county choppers and many other bike and car shows that continue to use it as well.

I'll second this. There was a topic that went south a couple of years ago when some "poking fun" at terms became racial. Intentional or not, things were typed that offended a member who seemed to have disappeared. The user name was "Gold-Something" (don't recall the whole name).

I love topics like this because it exposes those who can barely contain their racism.

As far as "old school" goes...slang changes from generation to generation.  Back in the twenties people were calling liquor "hooch" and saying things like "the bees knees" and and calling a girl's legs "gams."

In the eighties, I was saying things like "gnarly."  and "dude" (which I still say...and has remained constant as a slang term since the forties).

And "Old School" is a great term because its meaning changes constantly.  Its one of those terms no one can define with any precision but, when you say it, everyone knows what you mean.

That would be a line said by Clevon Little's character in the movie "Blazing Saddles."  Considered to be one of the best movie lines of all time.

I had to keep from chuckling when my boss was explaining something to me one day and he said "now, i dont know if your hip to that" but blah blah blah....

and the other one i get all the time from the baby boomers is "jive".  i hear that at least once a week.  "now do those numbers jive or not" blah blah blah....

and i guess everything was a "gas" back in the late 70's.  i dont remember the 70's because i was just a shot in the sheets.  (until 1975 :icon_smile_big:))
