For a 73 Roadrunner, there  are a few different types of control boxes. ie. Silver, Orange, Gold, Blue ect.
Does anyone know what the different colors signify??

Levels of performance.  Think of it as customizing the dwell in a points distributor to suit various rpm ranges.  Orange is the street performance piece, good to about 5500 rpm I think.  The silver one is a street/strip unit good to about 6500.  The blue is a race unit and I think it is good for another 1000 rpm.  My rpm ranges may be off and someone will correct me if I am but you at least should have the idea.

For street/strip I have allways run the Chrome box, Been running it for 26yrs now no problems, bought
a new one 5yrs ago because the original one was getting a little dull because of age, still works great.
Many people have had problems with the mopar Orange box, I don't recommend it.

Mancini site for the chrome box.

For a hotter spark and more capability, use one of Mopar Performance Parts' high performance electronic
control units. For general high performance use up through 8000 rpm.

And what's funny about that is that I have had the opposite problem.  After burning up 3 chrome boxes in two seasons, I went back to the orange and seem to be okay now.  I know my experience is out of synch with everyone else but what can I say?  It's how it is in my world I guess.

I just purchased their ign kit and sent in my dizzy for a recurve of 18º initial with 34º total all in @ 3200 rpm.

Before this I used the chrome ECU with no problems

I have yet to install/tune the set up yet.

Don was having issues with ballast resistors blowing but has since upgraded to the HD MSD unit.

Stay tuned....

I had 3 FBO units , couldn`t keep any of them working , I don`t remeber a control box failing but numerous ballasts some lasted only minutes , finally switched all 3 back to Chrome or Orange boxes

According to FBO u need to instal theirs ballast resistor for proper functioning, I read.

I run the FBO with no problems.  It made a difference I could feel over the Orange box I replaced.  also, Carquest sells an LX101 box that's a stock replacement that works nice also.
