I think its prob been a while since its been drove.. nothing done to motor, carb, or ignition. ...

First thought is bad fuel filter. But, need a few details of what is not happening when it does not start.  :scratchchin:

When it does not start, check these.
1 Pump the carb by hand, can you see gas squirting?
2 Pull plug wire and see if there spark?
3 Turn key on, then jump the starter relay with a screw driver. If it starts, bad ballast resistor.

Details on the ignition would help and what year car we are talking about. I can think of about 15 things that can cause a problem if you don't have spark. :shruggy:

Does it have points distributor? Maybe bad condenser.

If it sounds like it is trying to start (hits) when you crank the motor over from inside the car then stops when you let off the key, it is the ballast. When running the ignition only uses 6 volts, but when starting it needs 12 volts. The ballast is wired so when starting the ignition gets 12 volts, and only 6 when running. If the ballast failed, it will still get 12 volts when cranked by the key and will sound like it wants to start.

Did you test to see if you had spark, or gas in the carb?  :poke:

Till you tell us what is not happening we cannot help you. If by chances you do not know how to do a test, ask. You must all so be more clear. Case in point.

today tried to start Does that mean you tried just to start it or it sounded like it wanted to? :scratchchin:

doesnt sound like its hitting at all So it is just cranking? :shruggy:
