Big spring found among parts, blasted, replated and nowhere to put it

This big spring was among some loose parts in my car when I bought it (at least I have no recollection of removing it) and I have no idea if it is original equipment and where it might go if it was. I went ahead and refurbished it with a bunch of other parts anyway but what it's for is a mystery.

FYI - 1968 Charger 383/4spd.

Hi Bull
If not mistaken, that is a throttle return spring off your carb.

That big? :o I guess it could be for the original 2bbl but the thing is almost 15" long and the coil is 1" in diameter.

myk

15 inches long, one inch in diameter?  This is starting to sound like an excerpt from the Mandingo Massacre series.  I don't think that belongs on your car at all...

:iagree: :coolgleamA:

although  i'm pretty  sure there is a spring similar to that under the front  seats , something to do with the tensioner  on the seat tracks :scratchchin:  been so long ago since I done mine I forget , my memory is not what it was  :icon_smile_blackeye:   will have a look later !!

The throttle spring is definitely smaller in diameter. Maybe 3/8"? If there's one on the kick down (mine never had the original setup) it would be shorter. I'd lean towards a seat adjuster spring too. I don't have any handy to measure though.

Troy
Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

bull

The only springs I'm aware of on the seats are those little yellow ones for the latch returns and the track tension springs which are a lot smaller than this one. And the seat tension springs don't have the two rounded hooks on both ends. One end of them has more of a dogleg shape.

yeah the little yellow ones   :yesnod:     , i'm sure  there is one  like the you posted too , painted black !! sure ive seen it  somewhere  :scratchchin: , unless im getting confused to something else ive seen somewhere   :P :scratchchin:  will have a look at mine later & report back  :yesnod:

yeah that's the spring !!  mine below was originally black

had to take seat out !! as the springs are on the console side  :P  ,  don't think its the one in your first post Bull ,   one on the seat track is about  5/8" in diameter , &  the long end is the wrong shape , plus too many coils   , & this is  the one I was thinking of  :yesnod:  :P

You took your seat out? :o Jeez, man! I was able to get an eyeball on mine looking down past the console and could tell it wasn't the same. The seat spring has the one dogleg end rather than two rounded hooks.

Oh well, no biggie. Who knows what it's for. Probably got tossed onto a pile of parts years ago and put in the car. I will hang on to it, probably for another 35 years.

Tilar

Is there a spring that goes down and hooks onto the throw out bearing carrier to keep it tight up against the push rod from the clutch? That would be the only thing I can think of that might use a spring that size.
Dave

God must love stupid people; He made so many.

Ghoste

Maybe its just a spare part that the previous owner threw in.  Is it a high tension or lower?

There is a spring for that but it's shorter. It probably only 6" long at most and nearly half the diameter too.

It's low tension, very low. I can easily bend it around 180 by hand. Yeah, it has got to be an incidental catch. Pretty much everything is back on the car or otherwise accounted for and I don't know of any missing springs anywhere.

A383Wing

that spring in first pic is after market....

and yer PM box is full...I can't reply to your PM's to me
