Far as rotating mass you are good to go. They are both forged cranks, internal balanced motors and pretty sure the same rods where used, I think YL casting :scratchchin:

Funny, you have a 69 Road Runner engine for your 71 Road Runner, and I have a 71 Road Runner engine in my 68 Road Runner. 68 and 69 Road Runner engines where the same. But, I also still have my original Road Runner engine.  :2thumbs:

I have diff info on that.

For 1971 there was a change during the model year. Early 1971 big blocks came with 906 heads and later in the year they switched to 346.

bobfist

ok, but was it only the porting that was the diff?

I have B11 build date at the fendertag, so i guess this car would have 346 heads, date 11/11/71

11/11/71 would be a '72 model year car. 11/11/70 would be a '71 model year car.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

bobfist

but that is what my fender tag says B11, and its a 71 model i have

The difference was the shape of the ports. The heads will interchange on the 440 and all parts will interchange between the two heads.

Don't if this info is the same but might help. I have a '71 Charger. Fender tag has B11 which translates to a build of Nov. 11 from what I found out. Door sticker shows build date of 11/70.

yes...B11 is build date of Nov. 11, 1970....early car

bobfist

Ah so b11 is 70? Nice!
Bec if i run my VIN: RM23 N1G 143864 in decoder it says 71
vin decoder says 143864 = 43863th Vehicle, is that early ? :)
Then it could have the 906 heads then, if some was leftovers.

Pull a valve cover and check the numbers stamped on the head....

346/906 will not matter for your build they look identical. While in stock condition I read that 346 will slightly outflow 906's on exhaust the real difference was that 346 were induction hardened exhaust seats for unleaded fuel. Induction hardening is just a surface hardening, a couple of valve seating's and it's removed anyway.   A 69 838 would be 906 heads if original.

Where should one look for the #'s? And are you looking for stamped #'s not cast #'s?
Reason I ask is I had my DS cover off last year and only found a 7 digit # casted in the head and a 4 digit # that seemed to be stamped on a plate and attached to the head. Might help the OP.

Car model year is 1971 built in Nov. of 1970.

Look along the intake runner. There should be a series of numbers like, "3462906", or "55453346"
won't be exactly like these, but you get the point.

I modified my above post but will add more info since you were so fast to reply Cooter.
The casted # I found was 3482348. Sound right?

Yeah, looks to be "346" heads.

This is the only pic I took. I'm planning on pulling the pass side this year to check the movement of the rockers/cam condition. I'll look for the number on that side and clean it a bit.
So by Nov. 1970 it looks like they were building w/the 346 heads.
