It is aggravating to say the least.

I have 2 driveways. One in front that goes to the attached garage. One that wraps around the house to my back shop and goes out on the side road. Our neighbors to the North, (my second driveway between my house and theirs), have people stop by and they have kids parties often. I am forever chasing people out of my driveway. Just the other night shortly after pulling in to the back with groceries, a guy stopped by to see the neighbor on a moped. Parked about 8-10 feet up in my driveway. There are no lights there and had I been a few minutes later I would have run that little pile of shit over....

I hate to be the jerk neighbor, but this IS MY DRIVEWAY!!!!  One day I am going to follow one of them home and just park my truck in their driveway and see how they like it!!!  :RantExplode:

It'll be a hassle when you use the other driveway, but I'd install a gate across it.  2 posts and a metal gate like what is available for livestock, and you're set.  My neighbors currently use my drive to fix their cars in because it's level.  They don't bother cleaning theirs out so they can use it. :rotz:

do you live in one of those open (no fences) neighbourhoods   if not a nice gate fixes the problem .  us aussies like a nice 6' fence to go with it , keeps the riffraff out  :yesnod:

This is my house. Love the set up and the neighborhood, BUTTTTT!!!!

If I had the money to do it I would fence the yard and put gates on both driveways. Putting manual gates on there is not an option for me as I sometimes have too much trouble getting and out of the truck. I cannot park in the house garage as the truck is too long. Also, I should not have to. I really shouldn't have to put up signs or gates or chase people out. It is my driveway. NOT a public parking area.. Hell, I have had people drive through my back yard!!!!! Kids skateboarding in my back driveway!! When we first bought the place and I was remodeling it, I went for an afternoon naked swim. When I came up from a full plunge, I saw two little girls and heard: Mommy, it looks like someone moved in here. Then I see MOMMY and her friend both pushing babies in carts!!!!  Hell, I could have gone to jail for swimming in my own back yard!!!

This is an old picture from before I owned the house. Their driveway next door has been 3 cars wide since I moved here and it is done in pavers. My driveway is concrete. Do you think they can tell the difference??? SCHMUCKS.....

A few years ago my younger daughter came over and had to drive on the grass to get around someone. She got out of her car and went next door. Raised hell with the owner..  It just plain should not be this way.. I don't park in anyones driveway if not invited. PERIOD!!

Have you reminded them that its your driveway?

You can't fix stupid, so getting others to voluntarily change their behavior is not going to happen.
A gate is the only sure fix, but since that isn't doable then maybe a low decorative barrier on the property line? Like a two or three foot high white picket fence.
Maybe a line of shrubs.

Next time it happens, call the cops and have them tow off.  The site of red and blues flashing right beside it ought to do something about it.  You might want to put up a couple signs that say "Private Drive"

Troy

That sucks. My garage gets blocked on a regular basis but, since it's not at my house, I'm not there to catch and correct anyone immediately. I don't want to piss off random people who know where all my stuff is and when I'm not there so I ask nicely. If it were a place where I lived you can bet my attitude would be much different! The only time I got truly upset about it was when my dad stopped by to check on things and one of the jerks cussed him out for making him move. I didn't have to do anything about that because he got into a fight with the home owner a week or so later, got thrown in jail, and now has a restraining order so he can't be on the property. You really can't start a war with your neighbors because then you can't trust anything. It's best to take it easy and educate the little punks until they understand. If the house was empty for a while they may just be doing what they've always done.

Troy

I'm irritated just reading about this discourtesy.

People are clueless to be sure. Since your daughter has already gone over there once and
"read them from the scriptures", disrespect and discourtesy are a given here IMO.
Your property, house and shop are gorgeous.......of course I hate you right.
To fence it with 6' tall would be pricey.......in the PRK here it would be stoopid costly. Even running
a 3 rail split post/rail job would be expensive. I couldn't live without a fence around my property.

Gates, chains or even barriers of some type like cheapie plastic sawhorses would be a PITA especially if you have a mobility issue.....I personally know how that goes.

While it's a pisser to have to do, were it me, I'd buy a couple "private driveway" and "cars will be towed" signs and mount them one over the other on short 4x4 posts maybe 3' tall. Not too "in your face" but a very clear warning.
You should also speak with them as a good neighbor. Always take the high ground even if theres no reciprocity .They should be policing their visitors not you but its time to give fair notice. With their 3 wide driveway now there is no excuse for this.

Put up a fence or a hedge between the neighbor and your drive all the way to the street.

It will be surprised how lazy people are ;)

Lord Warlock

Only real way to teach the neighbors to respect your property is to fence it in, I'd put up a chain link fence blocking the driveways off, and put a motorized gate that will work via a garage door opener or some other motorized device to pull it open without getting out of the car.  Let a spring close it.  That way you don't have neighbors that use your driveway for their own use without opening a gate, and if they do that, then you can call the cops to report their behavior.  I wouldn't report them for occasionally parking in it if not closed off, and people come over, can't be the asshat neighbor that everyone hates.  Or maybe you can... know some of the neighbors haven't liked us over the years...but that was likely because I wasn't churchy enough for them.

I have my back garage blocked by a double gate, pain in the butt to open and close, but haven't had to move a car thru the gate in 7 years since i built the rear garage.  Someone would have to drive up past my front garage to get into the backyard to block anything so don't really worry about it much, everyone here has a driveway that will park at least six cars on, and our lots aren't huge either, just quarter acre lots for most part.

Might be a good time to take a few days, sit outside, and clean the ole shotguns. When someone decides they are going to use your driveway for their personal parking space, explain they have exactly 10 seconds to get off your property before you pepper their car with buckshot.... imho..

Find an old car that's ready to be scrapped. give them $50 to take it off their hands. Park it in your drive way next to their property. Invite some friends over , have a couple beers and take turns beating it with sledge hammers. Make sure this is when your neighbors are around. Later ,scrap the car, make a couple of bucks. At least you will get rid of some frustration.

Just a thought.

Steve P.

Hahahahahahahaaaaa.....   You guys kill me!!!

We do have trees between the two properties. That SHOULD be enough for anyone that actually gives a damn to notice and figure out it IS MY DRIVEWAY... Also their driveway is done in really nice pavers. Mine is shitty concrete. But it's like people think maybe the shop out back is a business that is shut down at night!! I never have the door open unless I am in the shop or pulling in or out. I even close it when I am cutting the grass!! I just don't want anyone eyeballing anything back there..

Thanks guys. I really just needed to purge. I think when I get home tomorrow I will take a walk over and have a chat with my neighbors.. They are cool peeps. Just a bit younger than us and they have put tons of money into their house, so it's a plus plus for us.. It's just their friends that come over and no one says: Hey, you didn't park in Steve's driveway did you!!!! Maybe I can convince them to check their friends and get them to stop...

To me I feel I paid for it. I pay the taxes on it. I have to power wash it. It is MINE!!! I should never have to drive on my lawn to get into my shop or have to drive around the block and go in from the other way. I pull in kind of crooked because of only being able to turn my neck a little. Having to back in from the other way I fear putting the front end of my truck into the pool or the side of the truck into the center post between the overhead doors...

I do wish i could build a wall around my place and put powered gates at the end of both driveways to the back.. Maybe one day when I am rich.... ;)

About a month ago my neighbors had a weekend long garage sale. They do this a few times per year. It never fails. People pull up and block the entrance of my driveway constantly. One woman dumped something out the door of her car as she was getting out. I opened the back shop and fired up my truck and went around to the driveway and laid on the horn just to make her move. Of course that was just to make me feel better, but it was pretty stupid on my part. I was just hoping that the neighbors would realize their customers were parking in front of my driveway and would stop them.

Sunday afternoon when they finished the woman next door came over and said she had something for our younger daughter that she knew she could use.. It was very nice and fairly new. I then felt like a schmuck. BUT, that should be just a neighborly thing to do. Not really a peace offering!!! Then their friends still pull this shit all the time......

I went as far as to type something up one time saying that this was a private driveway and wanted to know their address so I could go park in their driveway and block them. By the time I got outside the car was gone.. Yeah, felt like an idiot again....

I think I will just have a chat with them..  :2thumbs:

You could try blocking your own driveway for a bit..... maybe they would get the hint.

Or maybe park in their driveway to see what they think about that.

Generally I find that people are stupid..........
And when approached about issues like this have never thought of it as a problem.
Once they are told.... VERY clearly and with some "dont fuck with me" , things get better.

Always best to take the "good neighbor" high ground. Your neighbor does sound like a good egg in your most recent posts. Speaking with them is the right thing to do at this point. The reality of our times is that young people have no respect for others or their property and will react in vindictive ways in your attempts to make them see the error of their ways.
Criminals have more rights than you or me, if you were forced into "direct action" chances are you'd be the one going to jail.

Check with the police first, but you could post some parking trespassing signs that state it is a $100 fine for parking in your drive. Then buy some inexpensive tires boots ( http://www.reese-hitches.com/products/TCL-75 ) and put them on the cars until they pay or are towed off.
Or, install a couple of chain links gates at each end of your loop drive and open them with an inexpensive gate opener like this http://www.homedepot.com/p/Mighty-Mule-FM200-Light-Duty-Automatic-Gate-Opener-Combo-Kit-FM200-PBK/203642199?cm_mmc=shopping-_-googleads-_-pla-_-203642199&skwcid&kwd=&ci_sku=203642199&ci_kw=&ci_gpa=pla&ci_src=17588969 . We bought this house in June of 09'. It took close to 6 months to remodel inside the house before we moved in on Dec. 15th. The same neighbors mother lives on the side road to the East about 6 houses. She takes good care of the kids. Comes every morning and gets the kids off to school and every afternoon to bring the little girl next door home. (She is a little bit touched). Anyway, the guy that use to own this house let them use the driveway all the time and the gramma would walk most times through the back yard here. Parked at the end of the North drive every day she didn't walk. So one night just after we moved in, my wife was out on the back porch having a smoke in the dark. Gramma comes walking through the back on the driveway just outside of the pool cage and Mary takes a drag of her smoke. Gramma starts yelling at my wife that she scared the shit out of her!!!  Mary says: Sorry, but this IS MY HOUSE!!!!! Well, that ended Gramma walking through the yard.

Now gramma parks in front of their house or in their driveway. She always stops to say hello when she sees me, but I have never been able to figure out why anyone would make practice of parking in someones driveway they didn't belong in or block it or walk through their yard on a daily practice!! Even as a child I never played in anyone's yard I was not invited into. I guess I was just raised to respect everything and everyone and their property.

I have even had someone come to my door trying to sell some kind of crap that told me my garden hose going across my front walk was a tripping hazard. I told her that her being on my property and waking me up was a much bigger hazard to her health!! (I have a sign saying NO SOLICITING on my front door). You would not believe how many people do anyway.

I wish I could take this house and property and put it on a 5 acre parcel away from everyone.

Draftingmonkey, I could do all of that, but being a handicap with a bad back, I try to NOT make more work for myself in the yard. Any signs or posts in the yard make for more trimming work for me when taking care of the property. If I were a rich man I would simply build on a much larger lot and make it exactly how I want everything. Including block wall and powered gates. BUT, since that will never happen I figured I would just blow off some steam and have a laugh here knowing a bunch of you have that very special kind of sarcastic humor.. lol...

Thanks for all your answers and laughs.... I actually love the idea of Castle Walls and a moat filled with gators.

I went to Texas once to pick up a car for a buddy. The guy selling it was a lawyer. His place was 14 acres with the most incredible house, 6 car garage across from the side entry of the house with a roofed over cobblestone entry and a huge steel building out about 1000 feet from the house. The entire place had Iron fencing with block columns about every 10 feet and really wide iron gates. We pulled up and hit a button. He answered and opened the gates telling us to come over the bridge and follow the road to the house.. We looked at each other in amazement. So through the gates and about 500 feet in we went over the wooden bridge and then on up to the house. It was like we entered another World!! We parked there and walked down to the shop after he offered the restroom to us and something to drink.

Down this freshly laid concrete road to the shop. a 12 x 14 door opens as we walk up. Get inside and he turns on the lights that take about 5 minutes to come to full power/brightness. OMG THIS SHOP IS ENORMOUS!!! It had to be all of 60 X 100.... He had 3-4 cars inside and an old truck. All mopars. I was able to turn the car I was hauling home all the way around inside this shop without backing up!! He told me that he was having 2- 5-ton AC units installed the next week.

OK, so if I were a rich man I think I would build something very similar to that and have DC.COM parties there.  That place was incredible... I believe he told me he was setting up that shop to do restorations and would be hiring 2 guys to work in there full time... It was too dark to see the rest of the property when we got there, but I could tell by the drive up to the house it had to be incredible.

Had a similar thing almost get started on my place back about 10 years ago when I first moved here. At first, it pissed me off, but I figured out a better strategy, and grabbed the piece and went next door.
introduced myself, got invited in, sat down and began to ask who's truck that was parked beside my driveway.
began to explain that since my crazy cousin likes to come by the house and use my shop from time to time, he is bi polar, has PDSD, is on parole for stealing cars, and 'accidently' shot at me once after my ole Ford backfired, so they might not wanna park it there no more.

Every now and then the cousin comes by and brings his SKS, and we let off some steam. I told him bout it and said i wasn't too far off.

Never had no more trouble. Thing is, I've seen cases where once they know it bothers you, then, like here, they do it on purpose simply to piss you off.

I have a "turn around" that is at the end on my driveway and the neighbor decided he wasn't using it to his full advantage in his truck so he proceeds to use my yard as well as the turn around........ Doing this he rutted the hell out of the edge (my yard) so as a visual and deterrent, I pulled some of my wall stones and tossed them into the ruts so he would stop doing it.

The wall looks like shit but I don't have to look at it, he does.......

Or course, no apology, no acknowledgement of wrongdoing just stopped using my turnaround

Stretch

At the risk of sounding like some sort of redneck asshat I'll tell you how I dealt with a similar situation.

I live in a super small town (27 houses). Everyone knows everyone. The neighbor is a good guy. His 17 year old (at the time) son is disrespectful, drug dealing/using turd who I have caught in my shit more than once. I have told him and his dad more than once he needs to stay out of my shit. The boy mumbles under his breath. Dad apologizes and says it won't happen again very sincerely. I will say again, Dad is a damn good guy.

I have 4 lots. The last 4 on a dead end road and alley.  There is a full lot of lawn between their house and mine. One Saturday morning I got up around 5 A.M. and found Asshats ranger in my yard with empty beer cans and McDonalds all around the truck. I walked next door at 5:30 A.M. and calmly voiced my displeasure. Dad once again apologized and shortly there after the truck was gone and my yard was cleaned up.

Fast forward two weeks. I get up at 5 A.M. Saturday morning and find Asshats truck in my yard once again. This time I didn't go next door. I walked through my yard to the back garage, grabbed my truck and a chain, and drug his ranger out of my yard and left it parked across both lanes of the street, unhooked my chain, put my truck away and left it sit there.

Asshat or his dad have never said one word about it. His grand parents live directly across the street from me and his truck was pretty much facing there picture window when they opened their curtains that morning and I'm sure the turfed up sod under his tires told the story as to how it got there.   His aunt lives next door to them. I think I made my point with his entire family.

It's been 2 years now and his truck hasn't been in my yard sense and he isn't quite as cocky with me. In fact he comes around with his held down and never looks me in the eye. I think that's going to be the real problem one day. I hope not.
I may be schizophrenic but at least I have us!

Steve P.

You see. This is exactly what I mean. When we were young, we were taught respect for our elders/others and peoples property. We were taught to stand up for those who could not stand for themselves. We were taught to fight for the little guy. To have to go to a parent back then meant someone was getting a serious butt kicking. If it didn't work coming from our fathers, our grandfathers had that look that just told you what a pile of crap you were for doing whatever it was.

Today people don't have respect for others person or property. Our neighbors parking issue is really nothing. I could complain about a thousand things that I see every day that I never saw when I was a kid or young adult. People didn't empty their cars ashtray in your driveway or in a parking lot. Didn't throw beer cans on MY LAWN!! Didn't drive through a residential area fast, loud or blasting their stereo!

Everyone held doors for others coming into or leaving a store or doctors office. Held the door of an elevator till no one more was coming. Hell, people back home would wave to you to show a close parking spot they were about to leave!!

Today people put out their garbage cans without lids and their garbage blows out and all over the neighborhood. I have brought people on my street their discarded mail to sort of show them they are adding to the litter in the neighborhood. One neighbor wanted to know why I opened her mail. I said: Well I didn't and I also did not pay that bill for you!! She looked at me as if I just asked her to give me the chemical compound for rocket fuel!! I finally let her off the hook and told her: It must have blown out of your garbage into my yard. Maybe you need to use your can lids so it doesn't just blow all down the road!!!!  She closed the door and then I heard her yell at her husband.

It just doesn't take much effort at all to be decent to others. I'd rather my marker would read: Here lies a great guy that will surely be missed, not pea here and don't miss!!!!  ;)

Getting retaliatory can be a problem when they know where you live. There have been a few times I've struck back but nothing serious.

When a bunch of single guys moved in next door and started playing loud music at night I went to confront them but before I knocked on the door I saw a basketball they had left in their front lawn and got an idea. I have to be up at 4:30 am so I took the ball up to my bedroom, opened the window and removed the screen and then fired it at the dormer on the side of their house. It must have made a helluva noise inside because the music got shut off within seconds and never got turned back on. To this day I rarely hear any music coming from their house.

For a while there were some people down at the end of the street who decided the front of my house should be their overflow parking area. This is one type of situation where I will advocate for a neighborhood association because I made calls on probably four different incidents of illegal parking and it was dealt with. It hasn't been an issue in probably close to two years now. The only time I got "hands-on" was when they decided to overflow part a flatbed trailer in front of my house. I came this close to hooking it up to the Durango and hauling it out to an open field a half mile away but instead I pushed it by hand about a half block down the street. Never saw that trailer parked out front again.

Anyway, Steve, I would start small by putting signs up and going from there. You don't want an all-out war where you'll be worried about your property but you have to drop a few hints and mess with their heads at least until the situation calls for more extreme measures.

in all seriousness maybe you should just tell them luck I live here now and I don't want anyone parking on my driveway try to save a little bit nicer than that.  if that doesn't work then show them what kind of an a****** you can be

I do plan on having a nice conversation with them about it. I have no interest in being an azz about it, but put simply I do expect that I and my family can drive in at any time without having someone in the way. I cannot figure out how it ever got started. I would never even consider parking in someone's driveway that I was not visiting. Even when I have spoken with a few of their friends making it obvious that they are in MY driveway, they say something like, (I'll just be a minute, or I am just stopping to say hello). REALLY?? ?? ??

I guess I will have to be more firm with visitors. Obviously my neighbors should understand this, but I have always tried to keep the peace. Soon I will be working on my 65' here and I don't want issues. It's bad enough that I keep late hours and they are out early for work and in bed early. So I figure my payback will more than likely happen, though unintentionally.

Thanks for all your replies. Some of them really got my laughing pretty good!! lol...

Steve, take this for what you paid for it. Sometimes, you can attempt to talk facts to these types and sometimes, it works.
however, in my experience, unless the homeowners next door enforce your 'rule/respect",  almost never works. Calling a truce sometimes works but causes the perps to take advantage thinking your a pushover, and whaddya gonna really do? Also calling the cops really isn't an option either. I understand you wanna deal with this on the high road, but every now and then, you gotta climb down in the sewer to get to the problem.

Unfortunately, I see a gate in your future. Either that, or some "vigilante justice".

Well, I am a firm believer in an eye for an eye, but I am not 15 anymore. I will chat with them when it is convenient for me. If that doesn't work and I come home to one of their friends parked in my driveway, I will simply park in theirs.. It would be especially interesting if I happen to block in one of their friends. I figure that would get the driver back into the party asking who's big white truck it is and then the neighbors will have a better buried thought in their heads. I'm sure their first thought would be: With all the driveway he has, why would he park over here!! And it's true. I have a 2 car garage attached to the house with a nice driveway in front of it also. BUT,,,,,, Why would I park all the way over at their house????

They are pretty intelligent people next door. They will figure it out and understand that if I am going to be PUT OUT, so are they!

It would suck if I blocked them both in and they could not wake me up so they could go to work!!  :2thumbs:
