Ignition Systems? Best options? Again....

I've been searching quite a bit on this subject. The most informative posts I've found are from 2006 and 07. Anything with the technology change for the better? Or still stick with the old MSD/Mallory boxes? Or FBO/Rev N ator? Or is that a different setup? I still rock the old orange box Mopar performance ignition stuff. I just bought some Firecore 50 Wires from Ron and bought some NGKs. Looking for an upgrade... Thanks

Big changes: Firecore and Rev-n-ator didn't exist back then. MSD switched everything to digital. Mopar recently discontinued their electronic ignition conversion kit. FBO "upgraded" to different electronics.

I have an FBO recurved Mopar distributor with a Rev-n-ator box in one car at the moment. I did it because the Firecore distributor didn't look right in the mostly stock engine bay and it seemed to tall to work with the Six Pack air cleaner. I kept that setup for my other 440 which will have a 4bbl and a normal sized air cleaner. My test setup is an old analog MSD 6 running through a Mopar distributor. All of them are a world better than the Mopar orange box.

Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

Hi John

There are lots of good options for ignition systems these days. If you have a hot street/strip type build, my preference leans towards a multi spark box (MSD/Mallory etc....) along with a fully adjustable distributor that allows you to dial in your mechanical advance.

If you're using the MP external ECU setup (Chrome/Orange box) the REV-N-Ator is supposed to be a good upgrade. It also has a built-in rev limiter which is a nice feature.

If you want to simplify the underhood wiring there's also a ready to run distributor with built in ECU that eliminates the ballist resistor and supplies a hotter spark. Several members are using the Firecore RTR distributor with a matching HP coil and having great results.

Ideally you want a distributor that allows for as much tunability as possible to allow you to dial in your timing curve. It's also important to have a stable spark at higher rpm to avoid spark scatter. Checking for spark scatter is easy ; just rev the engine up looking at the timing mark with the light on it. If the timing mark is jumping around you have unstable timing aka "spark scatter"

I run the rev-n-ator, MSD blaster 2 coil and a MSD pro billet distributor. I like the rev box for its plug and play and rev limiter, the plugs look like they are burning the mix well and the timing is stable at revs. The MSD distributor is a solid piece but it uses bushings for mechanical advance limits. If you want to run more than 18 degrees initial it means making your own bush. ( I think FBO may have a limiting bush for the MSD). The firecore is probably a better option for adjustability.
