1968 VIN confusion

Looked at a '68 Charger today but the dash vin tag doesn't match the radiator support or trunk stamp. Any idea as to what the first letter in this stamp is AND what is the significance of the "X" in the assembly plant spot? Thanks.

A 68 does not have the VIN on the body.

What you are seeing is:
B= plant code=Hamtramck
8=year
X= first letter of the VIN and body type designation = Charger

remainder is the Sales Order (SO) number which should match the number on the bottom row of the fender tag.

You can't match a VIN to the SO in 68 without the broadcast sheet, window sticker, IBM card or some other document that has both numbers on it.

Here are some links that show how to check the numbers on Mopars. Its a tad thick since its different for 68s and 69s. Start with the first and be aware that the 2nd is primarily about 68s and the 3rd about 70s.

Yes. Due to the way SO numbers were generated/assigned the actual number has nothing to do with SPD. Theoretically, the lowest SO numbers could be on the cars produced last.
