I probably shouldn't say here in the Northern Left Coast it is currently 79 F and I thrashed the '68 around the country roads today. Wow...what a rush!  ;)

I'm with you on this :2thumbs:---survivors are more important now than ever before and they are rusting as we speak.

As the clock ticks all fades into the past.

The future value of survivors is for reference and perhaps the museum.  Every time a survivor is restored it reduces the the  number of remaining pieces of history.

We can build a charger as we want it to be and have fun driving it. Their is no need to violate the few originals that are left. :Twocents:  These are 45 years old now and were not made to last :slap:

I'll bring this one back from the dead. If I'm reading correctly this car claims to be an original 4 speed air conditioned R/T

I am about 30 min from that car. I can go check it out if anyone is interested. Also I read this entire thread and correct me if I am wrong but is is not correct for a 68 r/t 440 4 spd to have a  8 3/4 rear end?

Cncguy

Yes! Requires a Dana 60 rear which may also give it a trac pak code

WOW!!  :icon_smile_blackeye: (with a few exceptions) that sure looks like one of my fender tag decodes when the '68 Charger registry was up & running.
There were very few "FAKE" fender tags submitted, but one person sent in a couple  & one was a black 4-speed car  :scratchchin:

Can you share the VIN and a pic of the fender tag (there are a few errors and/or typos in the above decode).

6bblgt

my bad - I found the black 4-speed car in question, it was a real fender tag, just didn't belong to the Charger R/T VIN submitted with it.  :slap:

Should have a 3.54 Dana. Maybe differential was swapped at some point.

73rallye440magnum

I emailed the seller and he said he didn't have fender tag or broadcast sheet.

It has 3.54 and whats wrong with the decode as everything is on the car and build sheet? The U should be a B for black. I missed that.

You know I'm just not sure. It maybe you have a fluke car that was built without a Dana. But also That 3 representing 4 speed looks tampered with. Looks as though it should have been a 5. I could be wrong and we have another Unicorn.

BB14404SPD

Tag and build sheets are original as I have had the car for 25 years. The numbers on the 4 speed match the engine which match the car.

Hopefully others will chime in on this. I don't want to be the bearer of bad news but, That's still a 22 year gap and a lot can happen in that time. VINS can be ground off engine and trans and re stamped. Fact is track pack was standard on R/Ts and your car should have a Dana 60. The reason for a Dana was 8-3/4 failures in the 440 and Hemi with 4 speed. Also your transmission should be 18 spline. Check that.
