More likely, a R/T with 440/auto that was changed to a 4-speed with a repopped fender tag. The 8 3/4" rear end gives it away.

:iagree:  440/auto/air cond. ...with a repop tag and 4-speed conversion?

He's also added to his description that it is a numbers matching car.

Getting a picture of the transmission number is fairly easy to get, however, it still has no Dana.

As most know, I am no expert on these things, but if this is BS, then the tag has to be fake.  So I started looking at the tag and compared it to other 68 tags to see if I could find any differences.  Now, I'm not sure what the tolerances were for these tags and if the guys here just check their own tags I'm sure my potential theory can easily be disproven... but if you look at the tag in question compared to several other 68 tags two things jump out.  For starters, there is some vertical space between the bottom of the capital letters and their corresponding numbers on the 3 other reference tags, but on the tag in question, there is almost no space at all.  Again, this could be within the normal tolerances of these tags - I just don't know.

Secondly, on the very top row look at the letter f.  In the 3 reference tags, the curved top of the f is very pronounced.... in fact overly so - but on the tag in question this is not the case.  It could be the photo I guess, but the f looks different.  Of course these things don't necessarily mean anything at all - but if this car is an impossibility then that means that either the tag is fake, or somehow the tag was made incorrectly.  But if it's the latter than the car would not have both a 4-spd and AC, so that leaves us w/ just the former.

Perhaps I looked at too small a sample size of 68 tags (about 20) and that both the f and the spacing were well within tolerances of tags made at that time, but I'll leave that up to the experts to comment.

The "1" looks goofy  :Twocents: and out of alignment.    Added, perhaps?

For what its worth, I just noticed the tag has the number 1 beneath the X for:  521- "tinted glass all windows"....required with air conditioning.

That's why we carry concealed up when dealing with cars  :2thumbs: but in all honesty a car with "paint that is starting to show its age with several paint bubbles" and "never seen snow except now to take pictures".......and this guy has a BIN of $52,000?? They must be spiking Appelton's fountains with bong water.

How do you think that compares to this one?

Can you tell the entire 10K date assembly? It almost looks like a 32** date to me making it a spring of 1970 assembly.

He's also added to his description that it is a numbers matching car.

It's very possible the engine, transmission and dash VIN (voila now numbers matching on a '68) came from one car then put an automatic A/C car.
The tag is remade to match the body numbers on the car and 'new options'.
No paperwork makes it hard to tie the VIN to the SO.

Now we've gone from a bad tag to a complete rebody.

The 10,000 day date code on the 4-speed looks to be either "2190" (I added the zero on both examples as the last digit is not visible) or "2490", meaning the build date was, respectively, either July 27, 1967 (WAY too early) or May 22, 1968 (after the SPD of the car).

just looks now like pieces of cobbled history. Too bad.  :icon_smile_dissapprove:  But maybe worth the current bid of $28,100.

XS29 83 3 = Charger R/T with 4-speed manual floor shift (A833)
XS29 83 5 = Charger R/T with 3-speed automatic

I have questions:

1.  If this was a repopped fender tag then they would have changed the 3 to a 5 for the transmission.  Did they forget?  If it's a legit 440/auto/AC tag with an additional '1' stamped under 'S' then the tag looks a little dimpled there.

2.  The font of the 12345678 line looks narrower than the other examples shown.  The previously mentioned 'f' does also look off.  Where were Chargers built for 1968 and are there known differences in the fonts for each factory?

After playing with contrast trans looks like:
B362501
?P833219?

Interestingly enough... my "dream" car is a bright blue, white top, white interior, 4-speed 68 Charger R/T. My birthday is 4/27 - which is the date on this tag. How cool would that be? Guess I'll have to settle for the one I already have... ;)

Too bad, because if it was real, I would have been a serious contender for it. As it is, there's just too much that's questionable with it for my tastes. Well, if anyone knows of an original 68 Charger R/T with a/c that's a done car, please keep me in mind. As a second choice, I'd also consider a 70 R/T in plum crazy with a/c.    :2thumbs:
