And, as far as the trunk floor goes, the holes are not drilled out for the body plugs.

I would like to follow up on this more.  I mean this inquisitively and no other way, it is obvious that there are many on here who know much more than I do and have been in the charger world considerably longer.  But my question is: since we know that mopar build stats are a little sketchy at best, as with many manufacturing numbers from this time, why is it impossible that this was a special order (as indicated) and that some fellow special ordered a 440 4 speed with air conditioning and 3.23 gears?  It seems possible that this happened, that the chrysler numbers don't reflect it, and that this guy has something that he does not know its rarity.  It is just as possible that this is a fake tag I suppose, but he isn't talking about its rarity.  He is also asking about what people ask for an R/T 440 4 speed in pretty good condition.  Maybe I am missing something or there is just something I don't know, which is also entirely possible, but I don't want to jump to conclusions.  Maybe this is what he says it is.  It would be nice if a potential buyer could bet Govier on it, but that would take way too long.

how do you come up with that? I know lots of cars that are 4spd with 3.23 gears as standard

BOOM!! :2guns:  A34 is correct and may have just found the smoking gun - (or the missing link) in this case.  :yesnod:

1968 4-speed equipped Charger R/T's (either 440 or Hemi) were built with a Dana rear axle, not the 8-3/4" 3.23/3.55 ratio.

Unfortunately the pictures don't show if the rear differential has a removable cover (Dana) or a smooth rear housing (Chrysler)

Could there be another "error"? on the fender tag  :shruggy: :scratchchin:  Tags shows "48" 3.23 sure grip.

Great catch!   :2thumbs:

6bblgt

ALL '68 HEMI 4-spd & 440 4-spd B-bodies are factory equipped with a 3.54:1 DANA 60 rear axle - NO 4.10s 'til the '69 model year.

Also, there are NO B-body automatic cars with a DANA 60 'til 1969 (& they are 4.10:1 ONLY).

As Dan stated early in the thread, it is a fake tag.

Once you know that, ALL claims on the tag go out the window. Faking tags is incredibly easy and far too common. Using only the fender tag can be the least reliable form of documentation. Broadcast sheets can be faked. Window stickers can be faked. Proving an exception to the rule requires a lot of rock solid documentation.  To date, I don't know that anyone can produce any legitimate document showing a 440-four speed A/C car exists.

So what carburetor # and distributor # came on the 440HP 4-speed air cars equipped with the 3.23 rear end?
Caution.... Low flying aircraft.

xs29bb1

As most know, I am no expert on these things, but if this is BS, then the tag has to be fake.  So I started looking at the tag and compared it to other 68 tags to see if I could find any differences.  Now, I'm not sure what the tolerances were for these tags and if the guys here just check their own tags I'm sure my potential theory can easily be disproven... but if you look at the tag in question compared to several other 68 tags two things jump out.  For starters, there is some vertical space between the bottom of the capital letters and their corresponding numbers on the 3 other reference tags, but on the tag in question, there is almost no space at all.  Again, this could be within the normal tolerances of these tags - I just don't know.

Secondly, on the very top row look at the letter f.  In the 3 reference tags, the curved top of the f is very pronounced.... in fact overly so - but on the tag in question this is not the case.  It could be the photo I guess, but the f looks different.  Of course these things don't necessarily mean anything at all - but if this car is an impossibility then that means that either the tag is fake, or somehow the tag was made incorrectly.  But if it's the latter than the car would not have both a 4-spd and AC, so that leaves us w/ just the former.

Perhaps I looked at too small a sample size of 68 tags (about 20) and that both the f and the spacing were well within tolerances of tags made at that time, but I'll leave that up to the experts to comment.

True, but..........that applies to cars equipped with an 8 3/4. As stated by others, all 440 4-speeds came with a Dana & 3:23's were never offered.

And what's up with that upside down exhaust clamp? I wonder what it's doing there and how do you tighten the nuts?   :shruggy:

SO is it a rebody??  i know the von & vins dont follow but on a 68 with only a vin plate, the rest can all be fake, as 69coronetrt said.

More likely, a R/T with 440/auto that was changed to a 4-speed with a repopped fender tag. The 8 3/4" rear end gives it away.
